Toreros Open Two Week Homestand

 SAN DIEGO—San Diego returns home to Fowler Park this week to begin a eight-game homestand after posting a 4-0 record last week.
 
The Toreros (12-4) opened up the weekend with an 8-5 victory of No. 16 Coastal Carolina on Friday. USD defeated Minnesota 6-5 on Saturday afternoon before wrapping up the weekend with a 5-3 win over Indiana on Sunday. San Diego was the only team to post a 3-0 record in the six-team showcase.
 
USD will play host to TCU on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before opening up West Coast Conference play, hosting Pepperdine Friday-Sunday.
 
The games will be streamed via theW.tv and live statistics will be available on USDToreros.com.
 
IN THE RANKINGS
• The Toreros entered the Collegiate Baseball Top 30 rankings this week at 24—their 14th-straight season with a national ranking and first time this season. 
 
LAST TIME OUT
• San Diego went 4-0 last week with wins over UC Riverside, No. 16 Coastal Carolina, Minnesota and Indiana to improve to 12-4 on the season.
 
• The Toreros were the only team to post a 3-0 record in the six-team Seattle Baseball Showcase at T-Mobile Park.USD opened up the weekend with an 8-5 victory of No. 16 Coastal Carolina on Friday. USD defeated Minnesota 6-5 on Saturday afternoon before wrapping up the weekend with a 5-3 win over Indiana on Sunday.
 
USD vs UC Riverside
• The Toreros set a new school record for runs scored last week in a 31-3 victory over UC Riverside on Tuesday afternoon. The previous record of 26 runs was set in 1980 against Long Beach State (Apr. 11, 1980).
 
• The Toreros batted around four different times, recording 25 hits and one error, while the USD pitching staff limited UCR to just four hits. The Highlanders (6-7) gave up 13 walks and committed five errors, using nine different pitchers in the contest.
 
• San Diego scored in every inning but the fifth and eighth, tallying five runs in first, third, fourth and ninth. USD score one run in the second, six in the sixth and four in the seventh on the record-setting day.
 
USD vs Coastal Carolina
• The Toreros used a six-run eighth inning to defeat No. 16 Coastal Carolina, 8-5, on Friday afternoon at T-Mobile Park in the opening game of the Seattle Baseball Showcase.
 
• The Toreros trailed the Chanticleers 5-2 heading into the eighth inning before breaking through to score six runs, behind a bases-loaded triple by Tora Otsuka. Due to a pre-determined time limit (3.5 hours) the game was called after the conclusion of the eighth inning, with USD on top.
USD vs Minnesota
• San Diego completed a dramatic walk-off 6-5 victory over Minnesota on Saturday afternoon.
 
• The curfew time limit was reached in the eighth—stating that a new inning may not begin more than 3.5 hours after first pitch—with the Gophers leading 5-4. 
 
• The Toreros scored two runs in the third to take an early 2-0 lead and added runs in the fourth, fifth. The Gophers tied the game up three different times before taking the lead in the top of the seventh. 
 
• With runners in scoring position, Connor Doyle made a heads-up play after the Gophers catcher threw a dropped-third-strike back to the pitcher. Doyle reached safely on a stealthy run down to first base to save USD an out. With the bases loaded, Cody Jefferis and Shane McGuire both drew walks to force in runs for the victory.
 
USD vs Indiana
• The Toreros concluded the Seattle Baseball Showcase with a 5-3 victory over Indiana on Sunday.
 
• After a leadoff homerun in the sixth inning pulled the Hoosiers (7-7) within one, Travis Kuhn came in for the Toreros (12-4) on the mound. Kuhn pitched four perfect innings, retiring 12 batters in a row, including 10 strikeouts for the victory.
 
• The Toreros jumped out to an early 3-0 lead—scoring three runs in the top of the first and forcing the Hoosiers to play catchup for the remainder of the contest. USD added insurance runs in the sixth and ninth, while limiting IU to three runs on six hits with three runners left on base.
 
Big Performances
• The Toreros batted .338 (45-for-133) with five doubles, a triple and 47 RBIs. USD posted a .391 slugging percentage and .489 on-base percentage in four games.
 
• Jeff Houghtby started all four games for USD, batting .533 (8-for-15) with two doubles and three runs. Houghtby drove in five RBIs with a .667 slugging percentage and a .588 on-base percentage. He went 4-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, three runs scored and three RBIsagainst UC Riverside and 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run against No. 16 Coastal Carolina.
 
• Tora Otsuka also started all four for San Diego and paced the Toreros with nine RBIs, adding three runs. Otsuka went 5-for-16 (.333) on the weekend including a 3-RBI triple in the sixth inning to propel USD ahead of Coastal Carolina.
 
• The San Diego pitching staff finished the week with a team ERA of 3.44, with 20 walk and 43 strikeouts. 
 
Noah Owen, Jake Miller, Cade Brown and Josh Hendrickson got the wins and Travis Kuhn and Jack Dolak each earned a save for USD.
 
• Kuhn pitched four perfect innings for the Toreros in their win over Indiana, retiring all 12 batters faced in order—including 10 strikeouts. 
 
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST TCU
• This is the first meeting between the Toreros and the Horned Frogs. 
 
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST PEPPERDINE
• The Waves lead the all-time series with the Toreros, 127-75 and swept last year's series 14-1, 4-0 and 7-4 in Malibu, Calif.
 
FRESH FACES
• Eleven newcomers (7 position players, 4 pitchers) have made starts for the Toreros in the early part of the season. Collectively USD's freshmen are hitting .310 with a .426 on-base percentage and have combined for 34 RBIs.
 
• Freshman Cody Jefferis has started all 16 games for San Diego, leading the team in hits (20), doubles (4) and is second in RBIs (15) and runs (12). Jefferis is hitting .333 with a .400 slugging percentage and .447 on-base percentage.
 
• Cal graduate transfer Ripken Reyes has also started all 16 games for USD, hitting .333 including three doubles and two triples for the Toreros. Reyes has a slugging percentage of .471 and an on-base percentage of .471.
 
• Freshman Jake Miller (1-0, 0.00 ERA) pitched a gem in his first career start for the Toreros. The righthander went 7.0 shutout innings, giving up three hits and no walks, with four strikeouts in a 4-0 win against Long Beach State (Feb. 19). He's made two starts and five appearances for USD, pitching 17.2 shutout innings, holding opponents to five hits and collecting 17 strikeouts.
