Dubb, Toreros Win in Twelve

San Diego defeated Gonzaga, 4-2 in 12-inning game Friday night

SPOKANE, Wash.—Stephen Dubb hit a two-RBI double in the 12th inning to secure San Diego's 4-2 victory over Gonzaga on Friday night at Patterson Complex.
 
The Toreros (18-8, 4-3 WCC) held a 2-0 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth inning before the Bulldogs (10-12, 3-4 WCC) rallied to tie the game 2-2. With runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the 12th, Dubb sent a line drive into the left field corner to score Shane McGuire and Chris McCready to retake the lead.
 
Gonzaga threatened in the bottom of the twelfth with a runner on third with one out, but two Grady Miller strikeouts secured the extra-inning victory for USD.
 
Chris Murphy turned in one of his strongest performances so far this season on the mound, going 7.0 shutout innings and giving up two hits and two walks with seven strikeouts. 
 
Nathan Walker was credited with the win for USD, coming in midway through the 11th with runners on first and second with two outs. After giving up a walk to on a 3-2 count to load the bases, Walker answered with a strikeout to preserve the tie and send the game to the 12th.
 
Miller was credited with the save for the Toreros—his first of the season.
 
The Torero pitching staff held the Bulldogs to five hits and stranded 14 base runners. USD similarly had several missed opportunities, leaving 13 men on base, including back-to-back innings with the bases loaded in the sixth and seventh.
 
Jeff Houghtby got things started for USD in the fourth with a double down the right field line. Ripken Reyes followed with single to advance Houghtby to third and Shane McGuire doubled to bring him in and put the Toreros on the board. Adam Kerner made it 2-0 with a sacrifice flyout to left to score Reyes from third.
 
McGuire and Reyes both finished the day with two hits—including a double—and a run and McGuire extended a 10-game hitting streak for USD.
 
The Toreros remain in Spokane to take on the Bulldogs in game two of the weekend series on Saturday at 6 p.m. PT.
