SAN DIEGO –
Aaron Frey and
Aidan Marmion each scored a goal while
Matt Wiher made six saves as the University of San Diego men's soccer team took down Cal Poly Pomona with a 2-0 decision in the Toreros' final exhibition match of the preseason on Saturday at Torero Stadium.
Â
Frey and Marmion, both junior defenders, scored their goals in the 23rd and 62nd minute, respectively, to provide the offense for the Toreros. Meanwhile, the redshirt sophomore Wiher made three saves in each half to turn in the shutout against the Broncos, who are ranked No. 2 in the Division II preseason Top 25 rankings.
Â
The Toreros outshot Cal Poly Pomona, 12-10, but saw five of those attempts on goal. Frey tied for the team lead in shots with two, matched by sophomore
Jacob Planell and freshman
Jake Schneider. Schneider added an assist on the goal by Marmion.
Â
Frey notched his tally after he received a pass from sophomore
Paul Ramlow inside the goal area. The Hanau, Germany native followed by delivering a powerful strike into the upper right corner past a diving Miguel Bayma.
Â
Marmion made it 2-0 Toreros early in the second half when he dribbled Schneider's pass inside the goal area on the right side before placing a shot into the lower left corner to beat a diving Jordan Aldama.
Â
Wiher, the All-WCC Freshman Team selection last season, made his two biggest saves early in the first half. After the Toreros went up 1-0, Wiher held back the Broncos' attempts at tying the match with stops in the 12th and 15th minutes.
Â
The Toreros officially open the season on Friday, August 30 at rival San Diego State. A season ago, the Toreros fell to the Aztecs, 2-0, in Torero Stadium. However, San Diego is unbeaten in its season openers over the last five seasons.
