SAN DIEGO – San Diego begins the 2019 campaign at the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu, Hawai'i this weekend.Â

The Toreros open the season against host Hawai'i on Friday at 10 p.m. (PT), then take on No. 13 Washington on Saturday (7:45 p.m.) before finishing up the weekend against St. John's on Sunday at 5:45 p.m.

San Diego's match against Hawai'i will be streamed via BigWest.tv and live statistics will be available for all matches at USDToreros.com.

USD went 18-13 in 2018 and finished third in the WCC standings. The Toreros advanced to the NCAA Tournament third round for the fourth time in program history and finished the season ranked No. 20 overall.

• San Diego debuted at No. 21 in the AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll after finishing the 2018 season at No. 20.

TRIO NAMED TO WCC PRESEASON TEAM
•
Megan Jacobsen,
Katie Lukes and
Roxie Wiblin were named to the 2019 All-WCC Preseason Team. It was the first such honor for all three Toreros.

• Jacobsen appeared in 30 matches, making 25 starts for the Toreros in 2018. The senior middle blocker was third on the team with 49 blocks and added 193 kills.

• Lukes was stellar in her first year with USD, appearing in 30 matches and making 20 starts. The outside hitting collected 229 kills to earn a place on the All-WCC freshman team.

• Wiblin started all 31 matches, splitting time between opposite and outside hitter. She earned All-WCC honorable mention, pacing San Diego offensively with 308 kills (2.75 kills per set).

WCC PRESEASON COACHES POLL
• USD was picked to finish second overall in a poll of WCC coaches with 71 points and one first-place vote, while BYU led the way with 81 points and nine first-place votes. Pepperdine was picked to finish third with 66 points, followed by Loyola Marymount (58 points), Saint Mary's (42), Pacific (33), Portland (33), Gonzaga (32), Santa Clara (18) and San Francisco (16).

STRONG CONFERENCE SHOWING
• Five WCC Teams were selected to the 2018 NCAA Tournament including San Diego, BYU, Loyola Marymount, Saint Mary's and Pepperdine, with BYU advancing to the tournament semifinal.

TOREROS ADD TALENTED DUO FOR 2019
• USD added two players to its roster for the 2019 season. Freshman
Grace Frohling joins the Toreros from Los Angeles, CA where she prepped at Marymount High School and played club for Sunshine Volleyball Club (18 Westside). The 6'5" opposite/setter was named a 2018 Under Armour All-America third team selection and 2018 PrepVolleyball Senior Ace.

• The Toreros also added libero
Camryn Tastad, a native of Solana Beach, CA, who transferred to USD after playing her freshman season at Oregon. Tastad appeared in 32 matches and 111 sets for the Ducks last season. She was third among Oregon players with 46 assists and fifth with 204 digs.

2018 ALL-AMERICAN SEASON
• The Toreros will be without 2018 All-America honorable mention,
Addie Picha in 2019. In her senior season, the middle blocker racked up 238 kills, 166 blocks (42 solo) en route to her second consecutive All-America honor.  Picha ranks fourth all-time in career total blocks (452) and second in career hitting percentage (.365) for San Diego.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST HAWAI'I
•  The Rainbow Wahine lead the all-time series with the Toreros 3-2, however USD has won the last two matchups in a row. Hawai'i and San Diego last faced off in 2017 in Honolulu, with the Toreros winning 3-0.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST WASHINGTON
• The Toreros are 0-3 all-time against the Huskies. The two programs met last year in Seattle for back-to-back matches to begin the season with Washington coming out on top 3-1 on Aug. 24 and 3-0 on Aug. 24.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST ST. JOHN'S
• This will be the first meeting between the Toreros and the Red Storm.

WIBLIN NAMED TO U.S. COLLEGIATE TEAM
•
Roxie Wiblin was one of 28 players selected to the U.S. Women's Collegiate National Team-Anaheim roster in April of 2019. The CNT-Anaheim roster is comprised of current collegiate players who trained and competed at the U.S. National Team Training Center in Anaheim, CA from June 23-29. The team is part of USA Volleyball's High Performance pipeline and is considered a tryout for the U.S. Women's National Team.

TOUGH COMPETITION AHEAD
• USD consistently schedules top opponents and 2019 is no different. The Toreros will play five matches against four teams selected in the AVCA preseason top-25. USD will face No. 13 Washington at the Rainbow Wahine Classic at Hawaii on Aug. 31 before hosting No. 2 Nebraska in the JCP on Sept. 7.

• The Toreros will host No. 14 USC on Sept. 19 as part of their second invitational of the season and will take on 2018 WCC champion No. 8 BYU in Provo on Oct. 18 and at home on Nov. 15.

LEADING THE WAY
• Jen Petrie is in her 21st year with the program and holds a career record of 389-145 (.728). She won her fifth WCC Coach of the Year award in 2017 and has led the Toreros to the NCAA Tournament 19 times in her career. USD made its eighth straight NCAA Tournament appearance in 2018.

Brent Hilliard enters his 19th season with the Toreros. He was inducted into the Southern California Indoor Volleyball Hall of Fame on May 6, 2018.

Jimmy Lundgren enters his second season with USD, taking over for Marie Zidek who took a head coaching position with DePaul after the 2017 season. Lundgren joins the Toreros from Point Loma Nazarene where he coached for four seasons.
