USD Swim Kicks Off Season with Pentathlon

SAN DIEGO – San Diego opened its 2019-20 season with its annual pentathlon event, hosting San Diego State and UCLA on Friday afternoon.

It was the first event of the season for the teams and gave each squad their first chance to compete in a variety of strokes in a competitive environment. The first five events of the day - 100 free, 100 fly, 100 back, 100 breast and 100 IM - combined to make up the pentathlon, with points being allotted accordingly. The second half of the meet consisted of 50-yard sprints in the four major strokes.

Times for each individual from the first five events were combined and swimmers were ranked accordingly.

While the Toreros fell to both the Bruins and the Aztecs in the team scoring, USD's freshmen helped the Toreros secure some of their highest finishes of the day.

Freshman Elie Elena's 1:10.42 100-yard and 33.32 50-yard breaststroke times placed her in the top-15 for both events. Fellow newcomer Mia Shaeffer's 1:00.91 100-yard butterfly finished 20th and put her in a good position heading into the rest of the season.

Another freshman to watch, Callie Johnson, was the combined score leader for USD with a total time of 5:20.72, while junior Torero Kailyn Evans finished closely behind her with a time of 5:20.85.

The Toreros will be back in the pool for their alumni meet on October 5 at 10 a.m.
