SAN DIEGO – The Toreros will wrap up nonconference play with a road trip to face Utah Valley and Utah this weekend. San Diego will look to breakthrough again on the road after a victory at cross-town rival San Diego State and falling to CSUN, 1-0, in Northridge.
SCOUTING THE WOLVERINES
San Diego (4-3-0) will take on the Wolverines (3-4-0) on Friday at 10 a.m. (PT) in Orem. This will be the second meeting between the two teams as the Toreros lead the all-time series 1-0.
Utah Valley is coming off of a one game winning streak after defeating UTEP 2-1 at home. Forward Julianna Carter found the back of the net in the 88th minute for the game winner. The Wolverines also scored in the 15th minute after Heather Stainbrook connected from the right side. UVU outshot UTEP 14-9 in the contest.
Prior to their victory against UTEP, the Wolverines suffered a 5-0 loss against fellow WCC opponent Santa Clara. The Broncos scored three second-half goals to take the contest and outshot UVU 22-7.
The Toreros will look to shutdown redshirt junior Amber Tripp, who has scored three times for the Wolverines. Carter and Breanna DeWaal have also contributed on offense with 13 and five shots respectively. Goalkeeper
Allie Jara has seen over 450 minutes in goal for UVU and has recorded 21 saves and one shutout on the season.
SCOUTING THE UTES
The Toreros will then travel to Salt Lake City to take on Utah (4-3-0) on Sunday at 12 p.m. (PT) The Utes will face Butler at home on Friday evening before taking on San Diego. The two teams are meeting for the first time in three years after the Toreros fell on the road in 2016, 3-0.
The Utes hold the all-time series record against San Diego at 1-4-0. Utah holds home field advantage in the series winning both contests so far. San Diego has broken through one time the series back in 2004 at home with a 3-0 victory. Later that season, the Toreros went on to the NCAA Tournament, beating UNLV in double overtime in the first round before falling to UCLA.
Utah is coming off of two road wins against Boise State and Nevada. The Utes prevailed in double overtime against the Broncos, after Texas Tech transfer Alexis Rushlow scored on a penalty kick in the second overtime period. Midfielder Holly Daugirda and defender Aleea Gwerder netted both goals in the 2-0 win against Nevada. The Utes outshot the Wolf Pack 19-6 in the contest.
Six different players have scored for Utah in 2019, as the team is averaging 14.3 shots per game. Senior Carly Nelson has started in goal for all seven contests and has recorded 34 saves on the season.
LAST TIME OUT
Milan Moses scored the sole goal for the Toreros in a 1-0 victory against SDSU at the Sports Deck. The redshirt senior broke through in the 78th minute to give San Diego their first road victory against the Aztecs in the all-time series.
Michaela Foster was brilliant in the backfield for San Diego, as the senior was able to stop multiple Aztec advances and blocked several shot attempts. Goalkeeper
Amber Michel recorded her second shutout of the season and recorded six saves.
San Diego then traveled to CSUN and lost 1-0 on the road in Northridge.
Madison Louderback led the way on offense with multiple shot attempts.
