SAN DIEGO – Off to a 2-0 start on the season, the San Diego men's soccer team will continue its five-match homestand at Torero Stadium with a pair of contests this weekend. The Toreros host Detroit Mercy on Friday (7 p.m.) before facing Belmont on Sunday (12 p.m.).
Â
Led by five different Toreros scoring a goal so far, San Diego won its first two matches to a season for the first time since 2017. In addition to the five goal scorers, there are seven Toreros with at least one point, showcasing the distribution of offense of USD in the young season.
Â
Both matches this weekend can be seen on the WCC Network while live stats will be available on USDToreros.com.

ON THE ATTACK
Senior
Miguel Berry has fueled the Torero offensive attack to start the year, scoring two goals with two assists. The preseason All-WCC selection leads all conference players in points (6), assists (2), shots (10) and shots per game (5.0). He is also tied for the lead in goals with Anders Engebretsen (Saint Mary's) among WCC players.
Â
STANDING TALL IN NET
Matt Wiher picked up where he left off with his stellar freshman campaign by carding a shutout vs. Cal Poly this past Monday. It was his first shutout since October 12, 2018 at Gonzaga and first at home since his collegiate debut against UC Irvine on August 24, 2018. He had four as a freshman, helping him post the fifth-best goals against average (0.85) in school history.
Â
NEWCOMER STANDING OUT
Jacob Planell had a goal and an assist in the win against Cal Poly, making him one of five WCC players to have a multi-point game so far this season. Last year with UNC Greensboro, Planell had just one game where he had at least one goal and an assist in the same game (Oct. 16, 2018 at VMI: 1 G, 1 A). In his freshman campaign in 2018, the sophomore had five goals and one assist (11 points).
Â
LEADERS IN THE WCC
The Toreros scored at least three goals in each of their first two matches of the season for the first time since 2015. Four years ago, USD posted two shutouts (3-0 vs. #16 Cal, 3-0 vs. UC Riverside) to start the year and went on to claim a co-championship in the WCC with Santa Clara, finishing with a 10-5-3 record (5-1-1 WCC).
Â
STRONG START
USD is one of two undefeated WCC teams after the opening weekend, joining defending conference champion Saint Mary's (2-0-0). Both teams also lead WCC squads with six goals each.
Â
NEXT UP
The Toreros will host another two-match weekend next week when they face UC Davis (Friday, Sept. 13 at 7 pm) and Sacramento State (Sunday, Sept. 15 at 2 pm).
