Berry Drafted 7th Overall by Columbus Crew

Forward becomes tied for the highest MLS draft pick in school history

SAN DIEGO – San Diego's Miguel Berry became tied for the highest MLS draft pick in school history as the forward was selected seventh overall in the first round of the 2020 MLS SuperDraft by the Columbus Crew on Thursday.

Berry, an All-American, WCC Co-Player of the Year and Hermann MAC Award semifinalist this past season, matches Guillermo Jara (1996, LA Galaxy) for the highest a Torero has ever been drafted by an MLS team. Berry is also the first USD draftee since goalkeeper Thomas Olsen was selected in the third round in 2018.

A native of Barcelona, Spain and product of Poway High School, Berry completed the 2019 regular season in a tie for the nation's lead in goals (17) and was first in points (42). The Academic All-American and All-WCC First Team honoree finished the year tied for fourth in goals and second in points after postseason play.

Over the course of his USD career, Berry scored 38 goals in 72 matches (69 starts) and tallied 92 points. He is only one of four Toreros in program history with 90+ career points while his 38 goals are third-most.

Berry will join Olsen and Christian Duke as Toreros currently playing professionally in the United States. Olsen is a member of the Las Vegas Lights FC in the USL, where he played in 31 games last season, while Duke is on Sporting Kansas City II of the USL.

The 2020 MLS SuperDraft will conclude on Monday, January 13 with the third and fourth rounds. Senior defender Henry Lander is one of the remaining 89 players eligible to be selected with the 52 picks left in the final two rounds.
