TEMPE, Ariz. – Sophomore
Caleb Ricketts racked up four RBIs to help lead San Diego over the Minnesota, 7-3 on Sunday afternoon at Tempe Diablo Stadium.
Freshman
Carter Rustad (1-0) got the win for the Toreros (2-1). The right-hander went five shutout innings, giving up two hits, two walks and striking out four Gophers (1-2). Sophomore
Jake Reed also pitched well, going two innings, surrendering one run on two hits, walking none and striking out four.
Ricketts finished the day 3-for-5 in addition to his four RBIs for USD. Junior
Shane McGuire extended a three-game hit streak, going 1-for-5 with an RBI. Senior
Paul Kunst finished off a standout weekend, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate and scoring three runs for San Diego.
The Toreros scored in first inning for the third consecutive game, when Ricketts got an RBI single, scoring Kunst from second base.
USD held the Golden Gophers scoreless before expanding their lead in the third inning, putting up three runs in back-to-back innings.
McGuire, Ricketts and
Michael Dixon II all plated runs for the Toreros in the third and Ricketts capped off the fourth with a two-RBI single to make it 7-0 in favor of USD.
Minnesota put three runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but San Diego still coasted to the 7-3 win.
USD finished the day with nine hits and the Toreros went 8-for-9 in stolen bases in the Angels Classic finale.
The Toreros are back in action for their home opener on Tuesday, when they play host to UC Irvine at 6 p.m. PT in Fowler Park.
