Toreros Host Idaho State for Home Opener

San Diego will take on the Bengals in a double header on Monday

SAN DIEGO - San Diego softball (3-5) is set to compete against Idaho State (2-7) for the 2020 home opener. The Toreros and the Bengals will play a double header at noon and 2 p.m. (PT) at the USD Softball Complex.

LAST TIME OUT
  • San Diego earned one win over the weekend at the Golden State Classic, beating LIU 3-0.
  • The Toreros snapped a four-game losing streak with the victory as they fell to Utah State, Seton Hall and Portland State earlier in the weekend.
  • At the plate against the Sharks, USD was paced by freshman Savannah Alarcon who went 1-for-3 with two clutch RBIs in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Junior Halle Kyler also compiled a noteworthy day at the plate, going 2-for-3.
  • Both teams remained scoreless through six innings of play until Elisia Princic executed a bunt attempt in the seventh to get on base. Clareese Santiago and Kyler continued to work the small ball to score Princic.
  • Alarcon came through in the nine hole to score Lauren Hendrickson and Kyler for the final two runs of the game.
THE NO-NO
  • Madison Earnshaw earned her first career no hitter against LIU and the first for San Diego Softball since Lauren Berriatua in 2016.
  • Earnshaw dealt 74 pitches over seven innings of work, striking out two and issuing only one walk. The sophomore right hander faced 22 batters in the contest.
  • The no hitter marked Earnshaw's first win of the 2020 season as she's made four appearances and three starts so far for the Toreros.
  • Berriatua's performance back in 2016 saw five innings of work, one walk and nine strikeouts in an 11-0 run-rule victory over Saint Peter's.
TRENDING INSIDE THE LINEUP
  • Senior Sara Silveyra is leading the way for USD, batting .300 on the year. She also leads the team in slugging percentage (.500), walks (4) and on base percentage (.417).
  • Silveyra, Kyler and Hayley Hensley have been consistent at the plate for San Diego with six hits so far on the year and at least a double apiece.
  • Four Toreros have accomplished multi-RBI games so far this season in Silverya, Kyler, Alarcon and Sophia Bjerk.
  • San Diego matched its season high five RBIs against Seton Hall on Friday after setting the mark in the season opener.
SAN DIEGO DEBUTS
  • Freshmen Santiago and Princic earned their first career starts over the weekend in the DP slot.
  • Both came through for the Toreros in the win over LIU, executing bunt situations to help score three runs in the top of the seventh.
  • Princic has been efficient with an on base percentage of .500 in four at bats this season.
ALL-TIME SERIES
  • The Toreros are 1-1 versus Idaho State and are currently on a one-game winning streak.
  • This marks the first meeting since 2014 between the two programs and the first at the USD Softball Complex.
WHEN AT HOME
  • San Diego is 2-3 in home openers over the past five seasons. The Toreros will look to break at two-game losing streak in the category after a loss to Marshall in 2019 and a loss to Campbell in 2018.
  • This season's home opener will mark the first NCAA Division I home opener for head coach Jessica Pistole.
  • Over the past five seasons, San Diego holds a winning record at the USD Softball Complex at 59-45 (.567).
LOOKING AHEAD
  • After Monday's double header, the Toreros will travel to Palm Springs on Friday for their third tournament of the 2020 season.
