Toreros Open Week with Utah

San Diego will host Utah for a double header on Monday

SAN DIEGO - San Diego softball (7-6) will return to the USD Softball Complex on Monday to host PAC-12 opponent Utah (10-2) in a noon and 2 p.m. (PT) double header.

RECAPPING MARY NUTTER
  • The Toreros secured a 2-1 weekend at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with victories over New Mexico and Bethune-Cookman. San Diego held No. 16 Arizona State within striking distance in Friday's opener before the Sun Devils earned timely hits in the fifth to tack on four more runs. The Toreros couldn't get any closer as ASU earned the 14-2 victory in seven innings.
  • San Diego also competed in an exhibition game with the United States Olympic Team as a part of the Stand Beside Her Tour in Team USA's preparations for the 2020 Olympic Games.
  • On Saturday, Madison Casiano and Hayley Hensley helped lead San Diego secure the sweep as both players registered three RBIs apiece against Bethune-Cookman in the 9-1 victory.
  • Hensely registered five hits on the weekend with 5 RBIs, a double and a home run.
  • Casiano tallied four hits with 4 RBIs and a double.
  • Freshman Courtney Rose earned her first collegiate start against Bethune-Cookman and registered her first career win in the circle.
AT THE PLATE
  • Senior Sara Silveyra has continued to be a force for the Toreros at the plate, hitting .666 on the weekend at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. Silveyra leads the team in multiple offensive categories including hits, batting average, on base percentage and walks.
  • Through 13 games, Silveyra continues to be one of the toughest hitters to strikeout in NCAA Division I. She is now only one of 75 players left in the country to not register a strikeout.
  • Hensley has also emerged as an important piece of San Diego's lineup, slugging .457 on the season and batting .314. She slugged her first home run of the year at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic while tacking on a double.
  • The Toreros are currently out hitting opponents with runners in scoring position and with two outs.
  • San Diego has recorded 31 two-out RBIs compared to 25 from its opponents.
  • Kelli Kufta leads the way for USD in scoring opportunities, batting .556 with runners in position.
INSIDE THE CIRCLE
  • San Diego's entire staff saw action this past weekend with Rose earning her first start in the circle and fellow freshman Kelly O'Toole making her debut in relief.
  • Delaney Heller continued to be the work horse for the Toreros, leading the way with 10 appearances and seven starts.
  • Heller and Earnshaw lead the way in ERA at 2.33 and 2.82 respectively.
  • The senior right hander has struck out 45 batters so far this season as opponents have struggled to hit against her with an average of only .220.
  • Halle Kyler has played an important role in relief for the Toreros as she leads the pitching staff in batting average against with runners on base (.238). She has also been potent with two outs in the circle as teams have only registered two hits in 11 at bats in the situation.
AGAINST THE UTES
  • The all-time series against Utah is tied at 2-2 with the Toreros earning one win at the USD Softball complex back in 2009.
  • This marks the first meeting between the two programs in 11 seasons.
LOOKING AHEAD
  • This week marks another action-packed week for the Toreros as USD will cohost the San Diego Classic. Action will begin on Thursday at the USD Softball complex as the Toreros will host 14 games over three days.
  • San Diego will have a quick turnaround as they open up the classic with a game against Long Beach State on Thursday night.
