SAN DIEGO - Despite 18 top-three finishes, San Diego swimming and diving fell 165-107 to UCSD in a dual meet against the crosstown rivals at the USD Sports Center.
Prior to the meet, USD honored its two graduating seniors, Sam Terranova and Nicole Saladino, with a ceremony led by underclassmen.Â
"It was a nice send-off for our seniors, they've done a great job this year," said USD head coach Mike Keeler. "It was nice to see such great support for them from our alumni and team."
On a day dedicated to the seniors, Terranova proved useful for the Toreros, finishing second in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:46.65) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:14.42), the latter of which is a personal season best time.Â
Other top finishes and season best times by the Toreros included sophomore Sabrina Firnett in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:27.00) and freshman Callie Johnson in the 200-yard IM (2:11.96).Â
Despite the celebration of the seniors and the improvement in the pool, the team knows there is still work that needs to be done.Â
"We still have a ways to go," said Keeler, "but we are in a pretty good spot heading into the championships in the next few weeks."Â
The Toreros return to action next weekend for a three-day competition at the SD Imperial Senior Classic, starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday. After that meet, the Toreros head to their conference championships.
