Lopez and Kerner Show Out in Victory against Indiana

San Diego tallied 16 hits in a dominating 13-5 victory over the Hoosiers

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Adam Lopez and Adam Kerner each racked up three hits to help propel San Diego over Indiana 13-5 in Sunday's finale and take the series 2-1.

Grady Miller (2-0) started on the mound and picked up the win for the Toreros (11-4). The left-hander went five innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on three hits, allowing five walks and striking out three Hoosiers (8-5). Freshman Lucas Braun also made an impact on the mound for the Toreros, throwing two shutout innings while allowing one hit, with two walks and four strikeouts.

Lopez paced USD, putting together three hits in four trips to the plate with a solo home run and finishing three RBIs and two runs scored. Kerner added a double and three RBIs to his three-hit performance as well. Caleb Ricketts finished 3-for-5 with a double, a walk and an RBI in a productive day at the plate for the Toreros. USD finished with 16 hits on the day.

The Toreros scored in six different innings on the way to victory. San Diego jumped on the board immediately in the first inning and never looked back.

USD took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth before the Hoosiers were able put two runs on the board. The Toreros answered right away, getting the two runs back the following inning.

The eighth inning saw the biggest run production in the game with the Toreros plating four more. The big hit for USD in the inning was a bases-loaded double off the bat of Shane McGuire, who advanced to third on a throwing error that scored one more.

With the Toreros leading 13-2 in the ninth, IU put up three runs on a bases-clearing triple but USD was able to hold off any chance of a comeback and cruised to the 13-5 victory.

San Diego will return home for a Tuesday matchup with California Baptist at Fowler Park at 6 p.m. PT before beginning conference play on the road at Portland over the weekend.
