SAN DIEGO – The San Diego men's basketball team (3-1) took the lead with 10:51 left in the first half and never looked back in a win over UC Riverside (2-2), 74-62.
Redshirt senior guard
Joey Calcaterra led all scorers with 21 points, just two shy of his career high. Calcaterra shot 7-of-9 from the field, 3-of-4 from long range, and 4-of-5 from the free throw line.
Senior forward
Marcellus Earlington notched a season-high 16 points in the win, making 7-of-11 shot attempts, including two three-pointers.
As a team, the Toreros shot a season-high 50 percent (30-of-60) from the floor and outscored the Highlanders 18-3 on fast break points.
San Diego improves to 3-1 on the season, and will host Cal State Fullerton on Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After falling behind, San Diego used a 11-0 run to take an 18-11 lead midway through the first half. Calcaterra hit the latest with a triple to force a UCR timeout.
- The Toreros started 3-13 from the floor, but went 13-21 (61.9%) to close the frame.
- Calcaterra buried a long three-pointer with less than 10 seconds remaining, giving USD a 36-25 lead at the break.
- San Diego held UC Riverside to 1-of-8 to open the second half, and later rattled off an 8-0 run to go ahead 49-32. Back-to-back Earlington jumpers punctuated the run.
- The Highlanders used a 9-0 run in the middle of the second half to cut the deficit to eight. Earlington ended the run with a straightaway three.
- UCR answered with six straight points to cut its deficit to 52-47 with 7:32 remaining.
- Back-to-back and-one buckets from Wayne McKinney and Josh Parrish brough the USD lead to 56-47.
- USD made six straight field goals late, but missed five free throws.
- A pair of free throws from Calcaterra and Bryce Monroe in the final minute sealed the win for San Diego.
