Crucial Conference Conclusion Versus Cougars

San Diego volleyball set to host No. 4 BYU in final regular-season match of 2021

SAN DIEGO — San Diego volleyball (20-6, 14-3) returns home for its final regular-season match of 2021 on Tuesday night, taking on No. 4 BYU (27-1, 17-0) at the Jenny Craig Pavilion in a 7 pm contest.

The match will be streamed live on the WCC Network with The Voice of the Toreros Jack Cronin on the call, and live statistics will be available on USDToreros.com.

Tuesday will mark Senior Night for USD, and the team will honor the six members of its senior class in a ceremony prior to the match.

ALL-TIME SERIES VERSUS BYU
• The Toreros are 10-13 against the Cougars all-time, with the two programs' most recent meeting coming in late October in Provo, a 3-0 USD defeat at the Smith Fieldhouse.

• San Diego is 7-5 against the Cougars at home dating back to 1992, and most recently beat BYU at the JCP on November 11, 2019, a 3-2 win over the then-tenth-ranked Cougars.

• Sixteen of the last 18 matchups between the Toreros and BYU have come with the Cougars in the AVCA Top 25, including each of the last 15 times the two programs have played prior to Tuesday.

• The Toreros, who have appeared in the national top-25 poll for 24 consecutive seasons with 22 top-10 appearances, have defeated BYU seven times when they are a ranked opponent, including wins over the Cougars when they are ranked No. 13 (November 2012), No. 21 (November 2013), No. 9 (October 2014), No. 11 (September 2016), No. 8 (October 2017), and No. 9 (October 2019).

LAST TIME OUT VERSUS BYU….
• The Toreros lost in straight sets last time out versus then-eighth-ranked BYU on October 22, falling 25-17, 25-13, and 25-13 again at the Smith Fieldhouse.

• Senior Katie Lukes led the way for USD with 11 kills, freshman Emily Wilson totaled five, and sophomore Leyla Blackwell and junior Grace Frohling each added four.

• Senior libero Annie Benbow had eight digs, and Lukes, Blackwell, and senior Gabby Goddard each had two blocks.

• The defeat marks just the second time San Diego has been swept in 2021, with the other 3-0 decision coming in its first match of the season at No. 1 Texas.

LAST TIME OUT
• USD dropped a tough 3-1 decision at Pacific last time out on Saturday, falling to the Tigers in what marked just its sixth loss of 2021.

• The loss came despite 21 kills from Frohling, 11 from Lukes, and a match-best 23 digs from Benbow at the Alex G. Spanos Center.

• San Diego lost the first two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-22, won the third by a 25-18 margin, then was defeated in the fourth 25-20 to suffer a 3-1 loss in the match.

TOREROS NEAR THE TOP
• As the 2021 regular season winds down, multiple Toreros are at or near the top of the West Coast Conference's statistical leaderboards for kills, blocks, digs, and assists.

FROHLING FLOURISHING
• Junior opposite/setter Grace Frohling has paced the Torero offense with a team-best 385 kills so far in 2021, a mark that leads the roster by 70 kills and ranks second in the WCC.

• The Los Angeles, California native has tallied a team-leading 35 service aces in addition to her wealth of kills, and her 96 total blocks and 157 digs rank second and third on the team.

• On November 18 at Saint Mary's Frohling set forth a career performance, totaling 28 kills as she led the Toreros to a 3-1 win.

• She surpassed the 20-kill mark for the fifth time this season with a 21-kill afternoon at Pacific on Saturday, the third consecutive match in which she's turned in 20 or more.

• She's totalled 168 kills in her last 10 matches, including 24 at LMU (10/16), 19 at both Gonzaga and Portland (11/4 and 11/6), 21 versus Pepperdine (11/13), 28 at Saint Mary's (11/18), and 21 at Pacific on Saturday (11/20).

LUKES LEADING
• Senior outside hitter Katie Lukes has provided a potent one-two punch for the Toreros this year in addition to Frohling.

• She erupted for a career-high 27 kills in the Toreros' match at Gonzaga on November 6, leading USD to a 3-1 win over the Bulldogs at the Martin Centre.

• Lukes has recorded 15 or more kills in ten games this season, has reached the 20-kill mark on three occasions, and has notched at least seven kills in every match she's appeared in so far.

• She's racked up 154 kills in her last 10 matches, including 21 at LMU (10/16), 15 against both Santa Clara (10/28) and San Francisco (10/30), 27 at Gonzaga (11/6), 3 versus Pepperdine (11/13), and 17 at Saint Mary's 11/18).

• With the exception of a nine-kill performance on November 4, Lukes has recorded double-digit kills in each of her last 10 matches.

• Despite having only played in 23 of the Toreros' 26 matches so far this year due to a mid-season injury, the San Clemente, California native ranks second on the USD roster with 315 kills in 2021, a mark that is sixth in the WCC and the most among conference players who have played 23 matches or less.

BLOCK PARTY FOR BLACKWELL AND TOREROS
• Through 26 games in 2021 so far, middle blocker Leyla Blackwell and the Toreros have found themselves near the top of the national leaderboards for blocks.

• Blackwell, a 6-4 sophomore from San Diego, California, leads the Toreros and the WCC with an average of 1.34 blocks per set, a mark that ranks 14th in all of NCAA Division I.

• Her 127 total blocks in 2021 ranks 29th in the nation and also leads the WCC.

• As a team, USD has totaled an average of 2.80 blocks per set, a mark that leads the conference and also ranks seventh in all of NCAA Division I.

• The Toreros' 268.5 total blocks in 2021 lead the WCC and rank 24th in the nation

STONER SHINING
• Freshman middle blocker Haylee Stoner has also emerged as a defensive force to be reckoned with as she's racked up 29 total blocks (two solo) in her last six matches.

• The San Marcos, California native set forth five block assists against the Lions on November 11, then set a new career high with 10 block assists and one solo block against the Waves on November 13, plus four on 11/18 at Saint Mary's, and five at Pacific (11/20).

• She's accumulated 32 total blocks so far in 2021 in her first college season.

CAN YOU DIG IT?
• Libero Annie Benbow has been a mainstay for the Toreros on defense, totaling a team-best 411 digs through USD's 26 games so far in 2021, a mark that ranks second in the WCC.

• She set a career high on November 18 at Saint Mary's, racking up 31 digs as the Toreros took down the Gaels 3-1.

• The Frisco, Texas native is now in her fourth year with USD, and has earned All-WCC honors on three occasions (2019, honorable mention, 2020-2021 and 2019, academic honorable mention).

A HELPING HAND
• Setter Isadora Terçariol has been at the center of the Toreros' success so far this season, with  783 assists under her belt in 2021.

• She added 29 on November 11 versus LMU, then nearly reached her career high (49) with 45 assists on November 13 against Pepperdine, the eighth time she's reached 40 and the third time she's tallied 45 or more so far this season.

• Terçariol, a redshirt sophomore from Bauru, Säo Paulo, Brazil, has already bested her assists total from a season ago (239), and has appeared in 25 of USD's 26 matches.

HOW SWEEP IT IS
• USD's sweep over Portland on November 4 marked the team's 10th of 2021, and its ninth out of 13 WCC games.

• The Toreros have swept Hawaii (Sept. 3), Cal Poly (Sept. 4), Saint Mary's (Sept. 23), Pacific (Sept. 25), San Francisco (Sept. 30), Gonzaga (Oct. 7), Portland (Oct. 9), Santa Clara (Oct. 28), San Francisco (Oct. 30), and Portland (Nov. 4).

• They have only been swept twice in 2021, both times by Top-10 teams — No. 1 Texas on August 27 and No. 8 BYU on Oct. 22.
