Toreros Sweep Pilots

No. 20 San Diego defeated Portland 3-0 to sweep the series with the Pilots

SAN DIEGO—No. 20 San Diego notched its third sweep of the young season, defeating Portland 25-9, 25-17, 25-10 on Thursday evening in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
 
The Toreros (4-0, 4-0 WCC) hit .341 as a team, with two players reaching double-digit kills. USD collected 11 team blocks and 41 digs, holding the Pilots (0-6, 0-6 WCC) to 14 kills in the match.
 
Thana Fayad led San Diego with 14 kills, hitting at a .440 clip and adding four blocks. Grace Frohling tallied her second double-double of the season, finishing with 13 kills and 11 digs and hitting at a .455 clip. The sophomore also recorded four of USD's five aces in the match and added five blocks for a match-high 19.5 points.
 
Defensively the Toreros were paced by Camryn Tastad with 12 digs and Elly Schraeder with six blocks. Frohling and Lauren Turned each chipped in five blocks, while Roxie Wiblin finished with 11 digs and seven kills. Laura Madill collected 39 assists in the contest and added an ace for the Toreros.
 
It was all San Diego to start the match, jumping out to an 8-1 lead behind tough serving from Wiblin and multiple attack errors by the Pilots. Serving runs by Frohling and Fayad extended the lead to 19-3 and the Toreros never looked back. USD hit .450 as a team and cruised to the 25-9 first-set victory.
 
The teams traded the lead midway through the second set before an 8-1 run, sparked by back-to-back kills from Frohling, put USD out in front with a comfortable 18-12 lead. Frohling and Fayad paced the offense in the second frame with six kills each, and the Toreros took the set 25-17 to lead the match two sets to none.
 
In the final frame, the USD block took over, collecting six of its 11 stuffs in the set and holding the Pilots to four kills on 31 swings. Service runs from Frohling and Wiblin propelled USD in front 13-4. The Toreros closed out the match with three consecutive blocks and a kill by Frohling to secure the set 25-10 and the match 3-0.
 
Up next, the Toreros will hit the road for another busy week of four matches. USD will face Santa Clara on Tuesday and Wednesday with both matches scheduled for 2 p.m. PT. San Diego will then travel to Gonzaga for a pair of matches Friday and Saturday, both schedule for 12 p.m. PT.
