Box Score SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball lost 19-18 in 10 innings to crosstown rival San Diego State late Saturday afternoon after a high-scoring, back and forth affair at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The offensive barrage for the Toreros was headlined by
Adam Lopez's grand slam in the top of the third, a hit that quickly got USD back in the game. Lopez, a senior third baseman from San Diego, California, recorded five RBIs on the day. He was joined by two other teammates in notching multiple RBIs (
Shane McGuire, 3), (
Thomas Luevano, 3), while five more San Diego players —
Tora Otsuka,
Caleb Ricketts,
Cody Jefferis,
RJ Teijeiro, and
Will Worthington — drove runs in as well.
Nearly equaling their run total with 17 hits, the Toreros' big day at the plate began when McGuire continued his strong hitting early in games, plating Otsuka with a triple that went deep into the right field corner. Ricketts and Luevano followed suit with doubles of their own, and for the second day in a row USD was off to an early lead.
The Aztecs quickly answered San Diego's early runs, however, and by the end of the second inning they led by a 10-5 margin after scoring eight in the bottom half of the frame.
In the top of the third, the Toreros battled back. A walk, a single, and a hit by a pitch loaded the bases for Lopez, and he delivered a blast to deep left-center field that moved the score to 12-10 in San Diego's favor. Luevano followed up with a home run of his own, and by the end of the half-inning USD once again led, this time 14-10.
After San Diego State added two runs in the bottom of the fourth, Lopez responded with his fifth RBI of the day on a single before
Will Worthington chipped in with another RBI.
The Toreros scored two more times in the seventh and the eighth on a throwing error by Aztecs third baseman Cole Carrigg and a single from
Camden Vasquez.
Freshman righty
Carter Rustad started the game on the mound for San Diego, going 1 1/3 innings and surrendering nine runs (six earned) on five hits. He was relieved by
Conner Thurman (0-1), who threw a team-high 3 1/3 innings while allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits. Graduate transfer
Kieran Shaw then entered for his first appearance as a Torero, going 2 2/3 innings, surrendering six runs on five hits.Â
Eddie Pelc took over with one out in the bottom of the eighth, and pitched until the game's final at-bat in the bottom of the 10th when
Jack Dolak entered the game.Â
San Diego State rallied to tie the game at 18 apiece in the bottom of the eighth on a two-RBI single from Brian Leonhardt that moved the contest to extra innings. Due to recent rule changes, each extra half inning began with a runner on second base.
SDSU prevailed when
Jack Dolak's only pitch of the game, which was ruled a wild pitch, skipped past catcher
Caleb Ricketts and allowed Mike Jarvis to score from third base.
In their lone opportunity in extra innings with the runner on second base, the Toreros fell short when a failed bunt attempt from
Peter Abinanti resulted in McGuire being caught in a rundown and thrown out at home plate.
USD's 18 runs were the program's most since April 8, 2018, when the Toreros also put up 18 runs against LMU.Â
The third and final game of the series will be tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Fowler Park, USD's first home contest of the season.Â
