SAN DIEGO—No. 20 San Diego will continue a busy week of four matches in five days when it plays host to Portland on Wednesday and Thursday in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

The Toreros (2-0, 2-0 WCC) will face the Pilots (0-3, 0-3 WCC) in a pair of matches, both slated for 4 p.m. PT. The matches were originally scheduled for earlier this season, but had to be rescheduled due to COVID-19 protocols.

LAST TIME OUT
• The Toreros swept their opening series over Saint Mary's, taking both matches (3-0) in the Jenny Craig Pavilion to begin the season 2-0.

• On Monday, the Toreros opened the 2021 spring season in dominating fashion, 25-14, 25-22, 25-16. Senior
Roxie Wiblin paced the offense with 16 kills and
Grace Frohling added 11.
Thana Fayad finished one kill shy of a double-double, recording a team-high 13 digs and adding 9 kills.

• USD's defense held the Gaels to a .087 hitting percentage with 47 digs and seven team blocks.
Camryn Tastad also collected double-digits finishing with 12 digs in her first start at libero and freshman Elly Shraeder led USD at the net with four block assists.

Laura Madill tallied 35 assists, 3 aces and eight digs in her first match as USD's starting setter. All three aces came in the first four points of the match to start the season.

• The second match of the series saw more of the same for USD in a 25-23, 25-21, 25-22 victory. Three Toreros recorded double-doubles including Wiblin (15 kills, 13 digs), Frohling (12 kills, 11 digs) and Madill (36 assists, 11 digs). Fayad also registered 11 kills and was one dig shy of a double-double herself, adding 9 in the back court.

• The Toreros collected 62 digs as a team, led by Tastad with a career-high 15 digs. Shraeder led the team in blocks for the second match in a row, collecting four block assists.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST PORTLAND
• Wednesday will be the 67th meeting between the Toreros and the Pilots. USD leads the all-time series 56-9 and swept the series last season 3-0 in both matchups.

• The teams first met during the 1987 season and San Diego holds a six-match winning streak dating back to Nov. 10, 2016 when the Pilots took home a 3-2 victory in the JCP.

IN THE RANKINGS
• San Diego appeared at No. 23 in the AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll and has since moved up three spots to No. 20 in week three of the season rankings.

• The Toreros have appeared in the national top-25 poll for 23 consecutive seasons, with 22 top-10 appearances. USD's highest ranking was No. 2 overall (Sept. 16, 2013).

LOOKING AHEAD
• The Toreros will begin a string of four road matches when they travel to Santa Clara for a pair of matches (Feb. 16 and 17) and Gonzaga for a series (Feb. 19 and 20). The series at Gonzaga was originally set for earlier this season, but had to be rescheduled due to COVID-19 protocols.

HOT START FOR WIBLIN

Roxie Wiblin came out of the gate swinging to begin her senior campaign. The 6-2 outside hitter led the team in kills in both matches of the opening weekend for USD, tallying 16 kills in Sunday's match and 15 on Monday against the Gaels. Wiblin also notched her first double-double of the season adding 13 digs in the contest.

• Wiblin is averaging 5.17 kills per set to start the season which ranks first in the WCC and seventh nationally. Her .348 hitting percentage also ranks second in the WCC.

MADILL LEADING THE CHARGE
• Junior setter
Laura Madill has directed the offense to a .282 clip in her debut as the starting setter for USD, ranking third in the WCC and 22nd in the country.

• USD is averaging 15.33 kills per set in its first two matches, ranking first in the conference and fourth in the NCAA. Madill is also averaging 11.83 assists per set which ranks first in the conference and eighth nationally.
