Eight Straight Wins

Toreros beat UC Riverside 5-4 in extra innings to secure four-game sweep

SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball (11-3, 0-0 WCC) rallied in extra innings on Sunday afternoon to earn its eighth straight victory and secure a four-game sweep for the second consecutive week, beating UC Riverside (2-5, 0-0 Big West) by a score of 5-4 at Fowler Park.

San Diego trailed for nearly the entirety of the game, and was held scoreless through Sunday's first three frames after UCR plated a run in the top of the first. Back-to-back home runs from Caleb Ricketts and Adam Lopez in the bottom of the fourth inning put USD on top by a 2-1 margin, but the Highlanders were able to answer with three runs of their own an inning later to take a 4-2 lead.

Gradate student Paul Kunst was crucial in the Toreros' late-game comeback, cutting the UCR advantage to just one run in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI single before he tied the game at four runs apiece in the bottom of the ninth with a sacrifice fly to right field. Kunst also made a smooth sliding catch in centerfield in the top of the third that robbed UC Riverside of a hit.

San Diego successfully fended off the Highlanders' rally in the top of the 10th, with second baseman Thomas Luevano throwing out the would-be go-ahead run at the plate before catcher Shane McGuire caught a runner trying to steal second base with a perfect throw.

Cody Jefferis notched the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the 10th inning by drawing a bases-loaded walk to plate pinch runner Angelo Peraza.

True freshman Jack Costello continued to impress as he begins his college career, going 2-3 on the afternoon with a double, a triple, and a run scored.

Jack Hyde (Grossmont High School) started the game on the mound for USD and went 2 2/3 innings, surrendering one earned run on two hits, a walk, and two strikeouts. The freshman righty was able to settle in after allowing a run in the top of the first, pitching 1 /2/3 scoreless frames to end his outing.

Hyde was relieved by Grady Miller, who gave up two runs on four hits in 1 2/3 innings of work.

Lucas Braun then allowed another run in 2/3s of an inning before Carter Rustad, Ryan Robinson, and Kieran Shaw combined to toss five scoreless frames to conclude the game. Shaw earned the win for Sunday afternoon's game, moving his record to 1-0 on the year.

The 5-4 victory over UC Riverside was USD's 11th win in its last 12 contests.

The Toreros return to action on Friday, March 19 at 3 p.m. when they begin conference play at Saint Mary's.
