Toreros Fall to No. 16 BYU

No. 21 San Diego fell to No. 16 BYU, 20-25, 20-25, 25-19, 17-25

SAN DIEGO—Roxie Wiblin recorded 18 kills for the second straight match but No. 21 San Diego fell to No. 16 BYU, 3-1, on Wednesday afternoon in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

The Toreros (11-2, 11-2 WCC) hit .152 as a team, with Wiblin as the only player hitting above .200, finishing the day at a .262 clip but USD dropped its second-straight match, 20-25, 20-25, 25-19, 17-25. Wiblin also recorded her seventh double-double of the season, collecting ten digs in the contest. Katie Lukes also reached double-digit kills, adding 11.

Annie Benbow led the way defensively in the back court with 15 digs for USD. The Toreros registered seven team blocks, led by Gabby Goddard with two solo stops and two more block assists. Grace Frohling also added four block assists.

USD was tough from the service line, collecting 11 aces on the Cougars (11-1, 10-1 WCC) and forcing BYU out of system the majority of the match. Benbow and Frohling both tallied three aces, while Kylie Pries and Wiblin had two apiece.

Isadora Terçariol tallied 19 assists in the contest, while Laura Madill added 15.

It was all BYU to begin the match, with the Cougars jumping out to an early 7-1 lead. A kill, followed by an ace for Frohling sparked a 13-5 run by the Toreros to take the lead 14-12. BYU responded with another run of its own, 9-1, to take the comfortable 21-15 advantage. USD attempted to rally late, behind five kills from Wiblin but the Cougars closed out the first set, 25-20.

BYU had the advantage again to start the second set, 8-4, before the Toreros pulled within one point on back-to-back kills from Lukes and a block from Frohling and Goddard. An 11-3 run gave the Cougars another comfortable lead late in the set at 19-10. The Toreros looked to be mounting a comeback after a kill by Wiblin and three-straight aces from Benbow, but BYU responded out of a timeout, outscoring USD 5-2 to reach set point, 24-16. The Toreros fought off four set-points before BYU finally closed out the second frame, 25-20 and took a 2-0 match lead.

The Toreros came out with renewed energy to begin the third set, taking a 12-5 lead early on. The teams traded points before a kill and an ace from Wiblin and a kill from Lukes gave USD the 18-11 advantage. Tough serving kept the Cougars out of system down the stretch and USD cruised to a 25-19 third-set victory to stay alive in the match, 1-2.

The Cougars took a dominant 18-5 lead in the final frame, due primarily to 10 Torero hitting errors. USD then put together a 7-1 run sparked by another Wiblin kill and outscored BYU 12-7 in the second half of the set but the deficit proved too much to overcome for the Toreros.

Next, San Diego will travel to Provo, Utah on Saturday for the rematch with BYU at 12 p.m. (PT).
