SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball (4-3, 0-0 WCC) powered past UC San Diego (1-4, 0-0 Big West) by a score of 12-4 on Thursday night, boosted by a strong start on the mound by
Jake Miller and three-hit games from
Caleb Ricketts and
Tora Otsuka.
Shane McGuire got the scoring started for the Toreros, working a full count in the top of the first inning before sending a two-run home run over the Triton Ballpark scoreboard in right field, his third longball of 2021. He led the team with three RBIs in the game.
San Diego added another run on another home run in the following inning, this time a solo shot to left from
Jack Costello, his first of the season.
USD would go on to plate runs in four consecutive frames to open the ballgame, with
Thomas Luevano,
Kevin Sim,
Adam Lopez,
Tora Otsuka and
Caleb Ricketts each contributing RBIs.
Ricketts was 3-5 with two doubles and two runs scored, while Otsuka was 3-5 with a double and three runs scored, plus a run-saving sliding catch in the right field corner in the sixth inning.
Jake Miller started the game on the mound for the Toreros and was sharp for the second week in a row, pitching five innings while scattering three hits, walking two, and striking out five. He received the win for Thursday night's game.
Eddy Pelc and
Conner Thurman each pitched an inning in relief, and each surrendered one run.
After the Tritons showed signs of late life in the bottom of the eighth,
Kieran Shaw entered the game with the bases loaded and nobody out and struck out the side.
Lucas Braun pitched a scoreless ninth for San Diego, locking up the 12-4 victory.
The series continues tomorrow at Triton Ballpark at 2 p.m.
