Road Stretch Continues in Provo

San Diego softball will take on BYU on the road

SAN DIEGO - San Diego softball (10-21, 2-4 WCC) will continue its eight-game road stretch in Provo, Utah as the Toreros will take on BYU (24-13, 3-0 WCC) on Friday, April 23 and Saturday, April 24.
 
The three-game series will begin with doubleheader action on Friday at 4 and 6 p.m. (PT). Game three is slated for Saturday afternoon at noon (PT).
 
LAST TIME OUT
  • After clinching the opening WCC series against Pacific, the Toreros fell to LMU in three straight games on the road in LA.
  • The Toreros looked to rebound in game two with a 3-2 lead headed into the seventh. Errors by the defense gave LMU an opportunity to load the bases and walk it off in the final inning.
  • The pitching staff worked to avoid the sweep in game three, allowing only two runs both unearned.
  • Courtney Rose, McKenna Braegelmann and Madison Earnshaw combined to allow only four hits in the contest.
  • San Diego threatened to even the score at one a piece in the top of the sixth as Faith Hernandez reached third but was stranded 60 feet away.
 
THE EMERGENCE OF THE LONG BALL
  • San Diego slugged homeruns in back-to-back games against the Lions, marking the first time the Toreros have hit the long ball in consecutive contests.
  • Sofia Delgado put up her first collegiate homerun in game one of the series as the freshman came up big in the top of the seventh.
  • Her homerun to left would be the sole RBIs of the contest as San Diego fell 2-4.
  • Alexia Torculas also hit her first career homerun for San Diego last weekend in game two.
  • The solo shot to left in the top of the fifth started a rally to help San Diego tie the game at 2-2.
  • The Toreros have hit four homers on the year with each coming from a different player in the lineup
 
FRESHMEN LEADING THE WAY
  • The newcomers continue to serve as the offensive bright spots for San Diego.
  • Amanda Limon, Malia Benson and Sofia Delgado lead the Toreros in batting average on the year.
  • Benson and Delgado are tied for the second most runs on the year with eight, while Limon and Delgado lead the way with hits on the year at 24 and 21 respectively.
  • Limon ranks second on the team in slugging percentage at .372 on the year and leads the team in triples with three.
  • The trio have accounted for 11-games with at least two hits a piece.
UTILIZING A STAFF
  • The Toreros have continued to rely on a whole staff approach on the mound with four pitchers earning five or more starts on the year
  • Three pitchers are now in double figure appearances with Braegelmann, Earnshaw and Rose
  • The trio have combined for 170.4 innings pitched and have struck out 115 batters in the process
  • Braegelmann has the lowest batting average against on the staff as hitters are only averaging .180 against the freshman
  • Katlin Entrup has also emerged in a relief role for San Diego with eight appearances on the year.
  • The freshman has pitched 20.2 innings, allowing only nine earned runs and striking out 11.
 
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST THE COUGARS
  • BYU leads the all-time series against USD at 19-7 with San Diego facing an eight-game losing streak.
  • San Diego has seen the most success against the Cougars in neutral site contests leading BYU 4-1.
  • The Toreros have yet to get a road win in Provo and are 0-6 in the all-time standings.
