WCC Play Begins Versus Saint Mary's, Pacific

Toreros to host Gaels on Thursday, Tigers on Saturday in the Jenny Craig Pavilion

SAN DIEGO-No. 25 San Diego opens conference play on Thursday night against the visiting St. Mary's Gaels before hosting Pacific on Saturday afternoon in another West Coast Conference matchup.

The Toreros outlasted USC last week in five sets on the road before dropping the back end of the road trip to Long Beach State. The Toreros (6-3) are back in the friendly confines of the JCP for Thursday's 7 p.m. (PT) conference opener against the Gaels. USD remains at home for a visit from the Tigers, a noon (PT) start.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST ST. MARY'S
• Thursday is the 37th all-time meeting between the Toreros and the Gaels. USD leads the overall series 26-10 and have been victorious in four straight dating back to 2018. All but one of the previous four meetings have been sweeps.

• The Toreros are 14-6 against the Gaels at home all-time.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST PACIFIC
•  Saturday will mark the 5th meeting between the two teams. The Toreros have been victorious in all of the previous meetings. They have swept three out of four all-time matchups.

•  The two teams last met during the 2019 season with USD coming out on top, 3-0, on Oct. 31, 2019. The two scheduled spring matches were canceled.

LAST TIME OUT
• San Diego went 1-1 last week against USC and LBSU. The Toreros won a five set thriller against USC on the road. USD then traveled west to Long Beach State and fell 3-1.

• Grace Frohling provided the offensive firepower last week, recording 37 points. She hit .243 with 30 kills offensively. Frohling also added 10 block assists and two service aces to round out the week.

• Leyla Blackwell and Gabby Goddard continued their all-around success by combining for 17 kills and 24 blocks. Goddard hit .263, while Blackwell hit .214. The two combined for 30 points up the middle.

• Kylie Pries continued her early season success as well. After taking home WCC Player of the Week honors two weeks ago, Pries recorded 27 points in the two matches last week. She collected 22 kills and two service aces offensively, and contributed five blocks on the defensive side of the net as well.

IN THE RANKINGS
• San Diego dropped four spots to No. 25 in the AVCA Weekly Coaches' Poll for week four (Sep. 19) after appearing at No. 21 last week.

• The Toreros have appeared in the national top-25 poll for 24 consecutive seasons, with 22 top-10 appearances. USD's highest ranking was No. 2 overall (Sept. 16, 2013).

• USD's highest-ranked victory came on Sept. 13, 2013 against No. 1 USC (3-1) in the Jenny Craig Pavilion. It marks the only time the Toreros have defeated a top-ranked team.

• The Toreros continue WCC play on the road next week. San Diego travels to San Francisco on September 30 and then moves on to Santa Clara on October 1. All WCC matches can be found on the WCC Network or can be followed via live statistics on USDToreros.com.
