In its fifth straight home game to open the season, USD never trailed in a win over San Diego Christian, 98-69. Fifth year guard Jase Townsend led all scorers with 18 points, shooting 5-of-7 from the floor and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Senior forward Yavuz Gultekin registered a career high 17 points in the win to go along with seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Senior Marcellus Earlington added 13 points and five rebounds in 13 minutes. Freshman Jeremiah Nyarko went into double-figures for the first time in his career, ending with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting.
SCOUTING THE AGGIES
New Mexico State is 1-1 this season, with a win over New Mexico Highlands and a loss to UTEP its last time out on November 12. The Aggies were selected to finish second in the 2022 WAC Preseason Poll after going 27-7 (14-4 WAC) and winning a game in the NCAA Tournament last season. New Mexico State lost all five starters and have 16 total newcomers. Senior guard Xavier Pinson (LSU transfer) was named Preseason All-WAC First Team. Through two games, junior guard Deshawndre Washington leads the squad with 17.5 points and 11.0 rebounds per game.
