Men’s Basketball Edged by California Baptist, 76-73

SAN DIEGO – Led by four in double figures, California Baptist (7-4) outlasted the University of San Diego men's basketball team (5-5) on Saturday, 76-73.
 
Graduate guard Eric Williams Jr. led the Toreros with 18 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, and two steals.
 
Senior guard Jase Townsend added 17 points, four rebounds, and four assists in the win, including 8-of-10 from the free throw line.
 
Graduate forward Jaiden Delaire also went into double figures, scoring 11 points on 5-of-10 from the floor.
 
USD drops to 5-5 on the season, and will remain home to face UC San Diego on Monday night.  
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • San Diego jumped out to a 7-0 lead with a Delaire triple and jumpers from Jawara and Townsend.
  • Led by a three-pointer from Lynch five points from Townsend, USD built a 27-16 lead with just over six minutes to play in the first half.
  • CBU knocked down back-to-back triples to cut its deficit to three late in the first.
  • By halftime, USD held on to a 36-34 lead.
  • Williams Jr. scored six of USD's first eight points of the second half, making it a 44-40 San Diego lead.
  • McKinney scored four straight points for USD, followed by a chase down block to maintain a six-point advantage for the home team.
  • Midway through the second half, the Lancers used a 10-0 run to take the lead.
  • The Toreros were held without a field goal for a span of 10:40, allowing California Baptist to go ahead 65-56.
  • Earlington and Jawara each hit a triple with less than 15 seconds remaining, but the Lancers held on for the win.

  • Townsend leads the team with 16.3 points per game.
  • After narrowly missing a triple double, Williams is now averaging 15.0 points and 10.6 rebounds per contest.
  • USD shot 46.2% (24-52) from the field, 37.5% (6-16) from three-point range, and 70.4% (19-27) from the free throw line.
  • McKinney ended with nine points (4-5 FG) and was a team-best +7.
  • California Baptist won the rebounding battle, 37-31.
