Men’s Basketball Dominates UC San Diego, 84-58

SAN DIEGO – Led by 10 different scorers, the University of San Diego men's basketball team (6-5) earned a 26-point win over UC San Diego (4-5) on Monday, 84-58.
 
The Toreros shot 51.6% (32-62) from the floor and 52.0% (13-25) from long range.
 
Fifth year guard Marcellus Earlington led all scorers with 21 points in 22 minutes, making 8-of-11 shots and 4-of-5 from beyond the arc.
 
Junior Sigu Sisoho Jawara contributed 12 points in the win, connecting on 5-of-8 shot attempts.
 
Graduate guard Eric Williams Jr. went into double figures for the eighth time this year, ending with 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
 
USD improves to 6-5 on the season, and will travel to Arizona State on Sunday for the first true road game of the season.   
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was an early defensive battle, as UCSD led 3-2 with 16:00 left.
  • Nic Lynch buried two triples off the bench, tying the game at 12-12 with just under 12 minutes left.
  •  A quick 5-0 run from USD, including an and-one from Earlington and a driving layup from Townsend gave the home team a 19-17 advantage.
  • The Toreros erupted for an 18-2 run, led by two threes from Jawara and five points from Earlington.
  • The USD run eventually got up to 30-4 to close the half. Heading into the locker room, it led 44-21. Over the last five minutes, Williams and Earlington each added five points, while Deuce Turner and McKinney combined for five free throws.
  • Earlington scored the first eight points of the second half for USD, including two triples. Jawara followed with back-to-back buckets to put San Diego up 58-32.
  • Benji Pierre connected on two from long range, as USD registered an 11-0 run to go up by 33.
  • Deven Dahlke scored eight straight points for the Toreros, including two triples to put the home team up 82-52.

UP NEXT
After playing nine of its first 11 games at home (with the other two being neutral site games in Las Vegas), San Diego will travel to Arizona State on Sunday.  The Sun Devils hold a 2-0 lead in the all-time series, including a 89-70 win on December 29, 2003.
