Holding a 56 to 36 advantage in field goal percentage, Saint Mary's (11-4, 1-0 WCC) defeated the University of San Diego men's basketball team (7-8, 0-1 WCC) in the conference opener on Thursday, 85-58. Sophomore Wayne McKinney III scored 14 points in the loss, including 8-of-9 from the free throw line. Sophomore Bendji Pierre registered a career-high 14 points, shooting 6-of-8 from the floor. Graduate guard Eric Williams Jr. added 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
SCOUTING THE DONS
San Francisco was selected to finish t-3rd in the WCC Preseason Poll, and registered an 11-4 record in non-conference play. In its WCC opener on Thursday, the Dons fell to Santa Clara on the road, 79-67. USF leads the conference and ranks 10th nationally in three-point attempts per game (29.2). Graduate guard Khalil Shabazz leads the team with 15.2 points per game, including 23 in the loss to Santa Clara on Thursday. Graduate guard Tyrell Roberts is adding 14.4 points per contest, starting all 16 games. Junior forward Zane Meeks leads the team with 6.7 rebounds per game in addition to 12.0 points.
