SAN DIEGO – A four-point play with 39 seconds left propelled Pacific (9-9, 2-1 WCC) over the University of San Diego men's basketball team (8-9, 1-2 WCC) on Thursday, 84-82. With 5.6 seconds to go,
Jase Townsend grabbed a rebound, dribbled up the floor, and narrowly missed the game-winning three-pointer.
Fifth year guard
Marcellus Earlington led the Toreros with 21 points and nine rebounds. He shot 8-of-17 from the floor and 5-of-5 from the free throw line.
Sophomore
Deuce Turner scored a season-high 14 points, including 4-of-7 from long range.
In his 100
th career game,
Sigu Sisoho Jawara scored his 1,000
th career point, adding 13 tonight. He is the fifth player on USD's roster to claim the milestone.
Townsend ended with 12 points, eight rebounds, and four assists in the loss.
Graduate guard
Eric Williams Jr. added 10 points, five rebounds, and six assists.
USD falls to 8-9 (1-2 WCC) on the season, and will remain home to face BYU on Saturday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Pacific started 6-of-7 from the floor to take a 12-4 lead. San Diego answered with a 6-0 run, including two buckets from Earlington and a McKinney jumper.
- Deuce Turner knocked down three triples to tie the game at 21-21.
- Midway through the first half, San Diego compiled a 6-0 run, including a Williams steal and dunk, to take a 29-23 advantage. Pacific responded with a 7-0 run to regain the lead.
- San Diego made just 1-of-10 field goal attempts to close the first half, and Pacific capitalized with a 6-0 run. At halftime, the Tigers grabbed a slight 36-34 lead.
- The Tigers registered a 10-2 run early in the second half to extend its lead. A layup and a triple from Jawara cut the deficit to five with 11:21 to play.
- After Pacific went ahead by eight, the Toreros fired off an 18-4 run. The road team responded with back-to-back triple, tying the game at 78-78 with 1:55 left.
- Earlington put USD back up by two with a layup. On the next possession, Pacific connected on a four-point play.
- McKinney went coast-to-coast for a layup, cutting the deficit to two with 11 seconds remaining. After Pacific missed two free throws, Townsend's potential game-winning three hit the back iron.
