Men’s Basketball Falls to BYU, 68-48

SAN DIEGO – Holding a 50.0 to 31.6 advantage in field goal percentage, BYU (13-6, 3-1 WCC) defeated the University of San Diego men's basketball team (8-10, 1-3 WCC) on Saturday, 68-48.
 
Graduate guard Eric Williams Jr. registered 14 points (5-10 FG) and eight rebounds for the Toreros.
 
Sophomore guard Wayne McKinney added 10 points on 5-of-8 from the field.
 
Junior guard Sigu Sisoho Jawara compiled nine points, four rebounds, and three assists in the loss, while fifth year guard Marcellus Earlington scored eight points and led the team with nine boards.
 
USD drops to 8-10 (1-3 WCC) on the season, and will remain home to face Pepperdine next Thursday.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • San Diego took a 4-0 lead after layups from McKinney and Williams, but BYU answered with a 6-0 run.
  • After USD regained the lead with a beautiful pass from Deuce Turner to McKinney, the Cougars responded with a 7-0 run.
  • USD missed 14 straight shots over a scoring drought of 10:06, allowing BYU to go ahead 27-10. The Toreros ended the 13-0 run with back-to-back triples from Williams and Jawara.
  • BYU hit a layup at the first half buzzer, and took a 31-19 lead into the locker room.
  • A 7-0 run followed by a 4-0 run helped BYU take a 20-point lead with 13:31 remaining. San Diego battled back, as a Jawara triple and two Earlington free throws cut the deficit to 11 with 7:27 to go.
  • McKinney ended a late 8-0 BYU run with a driving layup. After a spectacular alley-oop from Turner to Williams, the Cougars hit a free throw to seal the win.
