SAN DIEGO – One of the biggest games of the WCC season is set for Saturday night, as the San Diego men's soccer program (8-3-2, 2-0-0 WCC) heads north to face No. 12 Portland (8-3-0, 1-1-0 WCC) in a matchup of two of the conference's best at 7 p.m., on ESPN Plus.
LAST TIME OUT
- Behind a sterling goal from Mason Tunbridge, the Toreros earned a 1-1 draw with San Diego State on Oct. 14.
- Ethan Warne and Steven Ramirez tallied the assists on Tunbridge's long-range blast.
- The Toreros led way in shots and controlled possession for much of the game, earning the draw at Snapdragon Stadium in front over 3,600 fans.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
- San Diego is playing their second ranked opponent of the season, after unseating No. 6 Washington back in August.
- The Toreros are meeting a ranked Portland side for the second straight season, after defeating No. 7 Portland, 4-1, in Torero Stadium.
- San Diego has started its title defense at 2-0 in conference play, after going 6-0-1 in the WCC last season.
- San Diego is seeking to become the WCC's first repeat champion since Saint Mary's in 2018 and 2019.
- The Toreros rank 18th in the nation in total assists (29), while also ranking 45th in total points (73).
- In addition, the Toreros rank 18th nationally in assists per game (2.23), 35th nationally in goal differential (+11) and 37th in points per game (5.62).
- The goalies have also been stellar, as Luis Ludosan and Donovan Parisian have helped the Toreros rank 27th in the nation in goals against average (.846) and rank 30th in the nation in save percentage (.784).
TORERO TIDBITS
- Tunbridge now has 33 points in his last 34 games, dating back to Nov. 5, 2021 against Pacific.
- Tunbridge also ranks 29th in the nation in assists (six).
- Ludosan leads the WCC in save percentage at .806, which stands in 14th nationally.
- Ludosan also ranks 28th nationally and first in the WCC with a .792 goals against average.
- San Diego is undefeated when scoring two or more goals and scoring first so far this season.
- The Toreros have only lost two games in the last three seasons when they lead at halftime.
- Rhys Gourdie needs one more game played to reach 50 played as a Torero.
