Toreros continue WCC play with road matchups against Broncos and Tigers

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — San Diego volleyball (12-9, 8-3 WCC) is set to continue West Coast Conference play on the road this week, traveling to Santa Clara (11-12, 3-8 WCC) and Pacific (14-8, 6-4 WCC) for a pair of matches in Northern California.

The Toreros will get things started on Thursday night with a 6:00 p.m. matchup against the Broncos at the Leavey Center, then will conclude their road swing on Saturday afternoon with a 12:00 p.m. contest opposite the Tigers at the Alex G. Spanos Center.

Both games will be streamed live on ESPN+, and live statistics will be available on SantaClaraBroncos.com (Thursday) and PacificTigers.com (Saturday).

LAST TIME OUT: SAN DIEGO FALLS TO LMU AT HOME, EARNS SWEEP AT SAINT MARY'S
• The Toreros split their matches against the Lions and Gaels last Thursday and Saturday as they went 1-1 for a third consecutive week.

Thursday, October 26 - LMU 3, San Diego 1 (Jenny Craig Pavilion)
• USD took last Thursday night's first set in thrilling fashion, catching fire late to win a 25-23 decision and take a 1-0 lead.

• LMU responded with wins in each of the next three frames, prevailing by scores of 25-15, 25-16, and 25-22 to secure a 3-1 victory.

Saturday, October 28 - San Diego 3, Saint Mary's 0 (UCU Pavilion)
• USD beat the Gaels by scores of 25-16, 25-19, and 25-19 again last Saturday in Moraga as it prevailed in straight sets for the seventh time in 11 WCC matches.

• Nemo Beach's 11 kills helped San Diego out-hit Saint Mary's .298 to .132.

• Hayley Stoner paced the USD defense with a match-high six block assists.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST SANTA CLARA
• The Toreros are 47-32 against the Broncos all-time, and enter Thursday night's action on a 17-game win streak versus SCU that dates back to September 2015. Ten of the last 17 matches between the two teams have been clean sweeps by the Toreros. 

• San Diego and Santa Clara most recently met earlier this season on October 5, when USD earned a hard-fought 3-1 win at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

• The Toreros started that match in strong fashion, winning the first set by a score of 25-12 before dropping a tough 25-21 decision in the second. Twenty-five to 21 and 25-23 wins in the third and fourth sets sealed a 3-1 USD win.
 • Pries and Stivrins led San Diego that night with 11 kills each, while Stoner added 10 of her own. Freshmen Nemo Beach and Ella Durham combined for 16 kills. Leyla Blackwell's six block assists helped San Diego out-block Santa Clara 14 to seven, and setter Isadora Tercariol tallied a career-high 50 assists.

• The Broncos last defeated the Toreros on November 1, 2014, a tough 3-2 USD loss in Santa Clara.

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST PACIFIC 
• The Toreros are 21-1 against the Tigers all-time, with the two teams' most recent meeting coming earlier this season on October 7, when USD swept Pacific at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

• Stivrins and Pries played a key role that afternoon, with Stivrins tallying 12 kills and an impressive .417 hitting percentage alongside 11 kills and a .333 hitting percentage from Pries. Blackwell anchored the USD defense with three block assists as the Toreros held Pacific to a .099 hitting percentage.

• San Diego has swept each of its last three matches against Pacific and has prevailed in straight sets in seven of the last nine meetings between the two teams.

• The Tigers' lone win over USD came on November 20, 2021, a 3-1 decision in Stockton.

A HELPING HAND
• After not seeing any game action last season, Isadora Terçariol has emerged as the WCC's top setter in 2023, leading the conference with 10.19 assists per set through 21 matches that ranks 45th nationally .

• A native of Säo Paulo, Brazil, Terçariol joined the Toreros as a transfer before the pandemic-modified Spring 2021 season.

• She has since totaled 1,673 assists in a San Diego uniform, including a team-high 632 in 2023.

• The 1,500th assist of her career came in USD's 3-0 sweep of Pacific at the JCP on October 7.

• Terçariol was named WCC Offensive Player of the Week on October 9, making her the first San Diego setter to earn the honor since first-team All-American Gabby Blossom was selected on November 7, 2022.

LEYLA BLOCKS WELL
• San Diego native and La Jolla High School alum Leyla Blackwell ranks 37th nationally with an average of 1.28 blocks per set.

• Her 95 total blocks through 21 matches in 2023 are the most on the USD roster and rank second in the WCC.

• Blackwell earned her sixth career WCC Defensive Player of the Week honor on September 11.

MILESTONE WATCH
• Leyla Blackwell notched her 450th career block last Thursday at LMU and is now just 35 away from reaching 500 in her career. She is also just four career points away from 900.

• Madi Allen, who has started the season with 15 consecutive games with at least 10 digs, earned her 1,000th career dig last Saturday at San Francisco. She is also just four aces away from notching her 100th during her collegiate career.

• Isadora Terçariol reached 1,500 assists on October 7 against Pacific. She now has 1,673 across three college seasons.
