SAN DIEGO – The San Diego softball program (0-5, 0-0 WCC) will wrap up its season-opening seven-game road trip, when traveling to Long Beach State (2-3, 0-0 Big West) for a doubleheader on Wednesday at 3 p.m., and 5:30 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
- San Diego nearly pulled off the highest-ranked win in program history, but would fall on a seventh inning walk-off home run by national player of the week Maya Brady in a 5-2 loss to No. 2 UCLA on Sunday.
- Kesley Tadlock had another strong outing in the circle and kept the high-scoring Bruins in check for the first six innings. Clareese Santiago delivered the lone RBI for the Toreros.
OPPONENT HISTORY
- San Diego is 4-13 all-time against Long Beach State, having dropped the last three meetings.
- The Toreros have never won in Long Beach, with all four victories coming in San Diego.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
- The Toreros return all four All-WCC honorees from last season, led by All-WCC Second Team infielder Izzy Owen and pitcher Courtney Rose.
- Joecellia Roberts and Alexia Torculas, who were All-WCC Honorable Mention in 2022, are also back, with Torculas being named to the All-WCC Preseason Team on Feb. 7.
- Nine newcomers join the Toreros this season, including transfer Alyssa Hernandez and eight freshmen – Lauren Asia, Emma Giaime, Shawnese Hogue-Lacy, Taylor Johnson, EJ Joyner, Natalie McCliman, Carly Ruiz and Kelsey Tadlock.
- It's been a quick start for many of the freshman at the plate, with Joyner hitting .333 with a double and an RBI, while Hogue-Lacy added a two RBI double of her own. Johnson has been all over the base paths with an OBP of .500 over her first five starts.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Madison Earnshaw (264) ranks 10th all-time in strikeouts at San Diego and needs seven to match Amy Lopez for ninth all-time.
- Hernandez (98) is two games away from 100 in her collegiate career.
- Owen is off to a tremendous start to her season, leading the WCC in hits with seven.
- Johnson is currently the NCAA leader in hit-by-pitches per game at 1.00.
