Softball Welcomes Three for San Diego Tournament

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego softball program (7-16, 0-0 WCC) welcomes three teams to USD Softball Complex for the San Diego Tournament, hosting Michigan State, Western Carolina and Yale for games on Saturday and Sunday.
 
LAST TIME OUT
  • San Diego vs. Western Carolina – Saturday, Mar. 11 at 3 p.m.
  • San Diego vs. Michigan State – Saturday, Mar. 11 at 5:30 p.m.
  • San Diego vs. Western Carolina – Sunday, Mar. 12 at 9 a.m.
  • San Diego vs. Yale – Sunday, Mar. 12 at 11:30 a.m.
 
LAST TIME OUT
  • The Toreros built an early lead against UC Riverside and never looked back, defeating the Highlanders, 3-1, on Thursday afternoon.
  • Emma Giaime was brilliant in the circle, throwing seven complete innings, allowing just three hits and no walks.
  • Izzy Owen stayed red hot, hitting two doubles and going 3-for-3, while KJ Hopfer and EJ Joyner each drove in a run.
 
OPPONENT HISTORY
  • San Diego won the lone meeting in the all-time series against Western Carolina, winning a 4-3 decision on Mar. 13, 2025.
  • The Toreros are 2-4 all-time against Michigan State, but won the last meeting, 3-2 in eight meetings, on Feb. 21, 2015.
  • The Toreros will play Yale for the first time in program history.
 
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
  • San Diego has already played in eight games separated by one run this season, with several additional games featuring late-game, high leverage situations.
  • Owen was named the WCC Player of the Week on Monday, following a weekend where she hit .636 with seven RBI and two doubles. Owen is playing some of the best softball of her career right now, hitting a team-leading .367 with 10 RBI.
  • Owen is in the midst of a seven-game on-base streak, good for her longest of the season.
  • San Diego's freshman class has been strong at the plate in the early part of the season, hitting a combined .267 with four home runs and 25 RBI.
  • The Toreros are 6-2 in games where they register two or more extra base hits.
 
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Madison Earnshaw (278) sits in eighth all-time in strikeouts at San Diego and needs four more to pass Jade Quentin (281) for seventh.
  • Earnshaw also sits in eighth in pitching appearances at San Diego with 98 and in a tie for eighth with Anna Russell in starts at 69. She is closing in on becoming the seventh Torero with 100 appearances in the circle.
  • Johnson continues to draw hit-by-pitches at an enormous rate, ranking 12th in the nation and first in the WCC in hit-by-pitches per game (0.43). Johnson has been hit 10 times in 23 games.
  • Johnson also ranks fourth in the WCC in on base percentage (.484).
  • Owen ranks second in the WCC in hits (26) and ranks in the top-50 nationally.
