INDIANAPOLIS — San Diego golf advanced to the postseason for the third consecutive year when it was selected to compete in the Bath Regional, the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Committee announced on Wednesday afternoon.
The Toreros will take part in a 54-hole regional tournament at Eagle Eye Golf Club from May 15-17, and will compete in the event as an eight-seed. The top five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals.
San Diego qualified for postseason play after a strong 2022-2023 regular season that saw it win three times as a team. USD put together victories in its final event of 2022 (Saint Mary's Invitational) and its first of 2023 (Wyoming World Match Play Championship) before finishing strong with another win at the El Macero Classic last month, which marked its second-to-last event of the regular season.
USD's successful campaign was punctuated by a WCC Golf All-Conference Team selection for
Andi Xu and an All-WCC Golf Honorable Mention for
Kelvin Si.
Xu, a junior from Rancho Santa Fe, California, led the Toreros with a tournament win, a Top-5 finish, two Top-10 finishes, and a Top-25 finish in USD's 2022-2023 campaign.
His strong season included a win in the El Macero Classic on April 16, a second-place finish at the USF Intercollegiate on September 13, a T-7 finish in the Lamkin San Diego Classic on March 7, a T-9 finish in the Saint Mary's Invitational on November 2, and a T-25 finish in the WCC Championship last Saturday.
Si, a junior from Macao, put together his best performance of the season thus far last weekend at the WCC Championships, finishing seventh at Gold Mountain Golf Club. His 2022-2023 efforts also included a 3&7 Win at the Wyoming World Match Play Championship on February 11, a T-9 finish at the El Macero Classic on April 16,
In 2022, the Toreros qualified for the Palm Beach Gardens Regional in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida at PGA National Resort. In 2021, they advanced through the Albuquerque Regional at the University of New Mexico to take part in two rounds at the NCAA Championships in Scottsdale, Arizona at Grayhawk Golf Club.
