San Diego Sweeps Gonzaga on Senior Night in the JCP

All five graduating players shine as Toreros beat Bulldogs 3-0 for fourth straight win, 17th victory in last 21 matches

SAN DIEGO — San Diego volleyball (17-8, 12-3 WCC) rolled to a 3-0 Senior Night sweep of Gonzaga (1-24, 0-15 WCC) at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on Thursday evening, marking the Toreros' fourth consecutive win and 10th victory in straight sets this season.

Kristen Erland led the match with 14 kills while hitting .565 alongside a game-high five block assists. Isabel Clark and Nemo Beach chipped in 11 kills apiece, and Ella Durham added another eight.

San Diego prevailed by scores of 25-13, 25-21, and 25-17 to sweep the season series against the Zags after earning a 3-0 win up in Spokane on September 26.

The Toreros led from beginning to end in set one, but were down 20-19 to the Zags in the following frame before three kills from Erland, one from Clark, and back-to-back service aces from Madi Allen pushed USD back in front as it took a 2-0 lead in the match.

Set three was similarly contested, with the two teams tied 14-14 midway through. Beach broke the tied with back-to-back kills, and USD didn't trail again.

NOTABLE
  • Anni Evans led Thursday night's match with 36 assists and 11 digs, the most she's recorded in either category in a single game as a Torero. She also contributed two kills.
  • Erland's 14 kills were a USD career high for her.
  • Allen paced the match with 18 digs alongside a pair of service aces.
  • Anna Jaworowski added five digs, a service ace, and an assist.
  • USD out-hit Gonzaga .419 to .193 and out-blocked the Zags 9.5 to 2.0.
  • Thursday marked the Toreros' senior night, with Erland, Evans, Allen, Jaworowski, and Haylee Stoner honored in a pregame ceremony.
  • As a whole, USD's five senior night honorees combined for 45 assists, 35 digs, 21 kills, and three service aces on Thursday night.
  • USD has now won 17 of its last 21 matches dating back to September 8.

The Toreros are back in action on Saturday afternoon, when they travel to the Bay Area to take on San Francisco. First serve against the Dons at War Memorial Gym is set for 1:00 p.m.
