LAST TIME OUT - Ninth-Inning Homer Denies Toreros Sweep at Michigan
San Diego on Sunday afternoon took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth but could not hang on to secure a sweep of Michigan, falling by a 3-2 margin in the series finale at Ray Fisher Stadium after the Wolverines plated two runs in a last-chance rally.
Notable:
•
Angelo Peraza,
Jack Costello, and Smith paced the USD offense in the series finale with two hits apiece.
•
Austin Smith and
Jakob Christian scored the Toreros' two runs.
•
Jack Gurevitch drew two walks on Sunday, and Peraza, Christian,
Dustin Allen, and
Will Worthington each drew one free pass. Allen had San Diego's lone stolen base.
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST CAL STATE FULLERTON
• The Toreros are 15-16 against the Titans all-time, with the two teams' most recent meeting coming on April 26, 2022, when USD dropped a tough 8-7 decision at CSUF after holding an early lead.
• Four San Diego players — including current centerfielder
Dustin Allen — notched two hits that evening. Allen had three RBIs, a double, and a run scored in CSUF and USD's most recent matchup, followed by
Jack Costello, who had two RBIs, and
Angelo Peraza, who drove in a single run.Â
FOR STARTERS (PROBABLE)
• Redshirt junior right-hander
Ryan Kysar is set to start for San Diego on Tuesday night at CSUF.
• Kysar (0-0, 7.02 ERA) most recently pitched last Tuesday (March 12) vs. Cal State Northridge, when he surrendered four runs on five hits while walking two and striking out five across 3.2 frames.
• So far in 2024 he has made four appearances (all starts), compiling 16.2 innings, 19 strikeouts, and seven walks.
• Kysar, a 6-foot, 200-pound righty from Valencia, California, attended Valencia High School, and transferred to USD from the University of Arizona after his freshman season.
• He was named to the All-WCC Freshman Team in 2022 after his first year in San Diego.
JACK GUREVITCH NAMED WCC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
• Sophomore first baseman
Jack Gurevitch has been named the WCC Player of the Week for March 18, 2024, the West Coast Conference announced on Monday afternoon.
• Gurevitch batted .500 (7-for-14) while drawing five walks, scoring three runs, doubling three times, driving in three runs and stealing a base during San Diego's home win vs. CSUN and winning two of three at Michigan.
• He got on base at a .632 clip across the four-game stretch and boasted a .714 slugging percentage.
• On Friday, Gurevitch went 2-for-3 with a run, a double, two RBI and a walk against the Wolverines.
• He parlayed that performance into a 4-for-5 afternoon on Saturday, scoring a pair of runs, doubling twice, driving in a run and drawing a walk as USD won, 16-7, to secure the series win.
• This is the first weekly conference honor for Gurevitch, who was named to the 2024 WCC Preseason Team and the 2023 All-WCC Freshman Team.
BEST IN THE WEST (COAST CONFERENCE)
• From the beginning of the 2019 season until now, no baseball team in the West Coast Conference has compiled a better overall win/loss record than San Diego.
