Softball Travels North for Bulldog Classic

SAN DIEGO – Fresh off a key, midweek win, the San Diego softball program (6-15, 0-0 WCC) heads to Fresno, Calif., for the Bulldog Classic from Mar. 8 to Mar. 10 at the Margie Wright Diamond.

The Toreros will open with CSUN (15-4, 0-0 Big West) on Mar. 8 at 2:30 p.m. On Saturday, the Toreros will face Nevada (15-5, 0-0 MWC) at 4 p.m., and Fresno State (14-5, 0-0 MWC) at 7 p.m. On Sunday, the Toreros will face the Wolfpack again at 11 a.m., and the host Bulldogs again at 1 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
  • The Toreros managed to beat out the rain and win a key midweek contest, downing UC San Diego, 8-5 in five innings on Wednesday.
  • The Torero offense continued to shine, led by another big day from the freshman class of Michelle Delgado (2 RBI) and Tele Jennings (2-for-2, RBI, 2B). Courtney Rose helped secure the Torero lead in relief of starter Mo Wimpee.

OPPONENT HISTORY
  • San Diego is 8-8 all-time against CSUN and will look to respond after a pair of losses to the Matadors earlier this season.
  • San Diego is 2-11 all-time against Nevada and will aim to snap a three-game skid against the Wolfpack.
  • San Diego is 3-7 all-time against Fresno State and are seeking to snap a six-game skid against the Bulldogs.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR
  • Taylor Johnson enters the game on a 11-game on-base streak, which is good for the longest by a Torero so far this season.
  • Jennings (eight) and Johnson (seven) both stand at the top of the single-season doubles leaders through the first 21 games of the season. The program record in a single season is 18, set by Lindsey Fleet in 2008.
  • Joecellia Roberts became the first Torero to 10 RBI, doing it in just 15 games. She didn't reach that mark until Mar. 14 of last season.
  • The Toreros freshman class continues to roll in their first few weeks in college softball.
  • Jennings leads the team in doubles, runs scored (10), extra-base hits (eight) and walks (nine) while Delgado ranks in the top-three on the team in RBI and leads the team in stolen bases (five) this season.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Rose stands at 275 strikeouts and needs six to match Jade Quentin for eighth on the Toreros all-time strikeout list.
  • In addition, Rose stands in a tie for sixth on the Toreros all-time appearances list (108) and needs one more to pass Cassidy Coleman (108) for fifth.
  • San Diego leads the WCC in doubles (27) and ranks 59th nationally.
  • In addition, Jennings leads the conference and ranks 24th nationally in doubles (eight). Johnson is right behind her in second and 37th nationally (seven).
  • Arisa Tovar (six) and Shawnese Hogue-Lacy (four) rank first and second in the WCC in runners caught stealing. Tovar stands at 16th nationally, while Hogue-Lacy ranks 69th.
