SAN DIEGO – The San Diego softball program (12-28, 0-0 WCC) is set to open West Coast Conference play this weekend, hosting LMU (17-18, 0-0 WCC) for four games from Friday to Sunday at the USD Softball Complex.
Â
Friday's opener is set for 5 p.m. Saturday features a doubleheader at 1 and 3 p.m., while Sunday's finale is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
- The Toreros returned home to deliver a complete effort to win the non-conference finale, downing California Baptist, 2-1 on Apr. 2.
- Tele Jennings put the Toreros ahead in the first inning with her third home run in her last four games, while Michelle Delgado added an RBI sacrifice fly.
- Courtney Rose tallied a complete game, five-hitter in the circle, striking out three.
Â
OPPONENT HISTORY
- San Diego is 71-100 in the lengthy all-time ledger against LMU, but won the last meeting in last season's finale.
- The Toreros took two out of three games in last year's series, winning 2-0 and 7-2 in those games.
Â
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
- Taylor Johnson (14) and Jennings (12) both stand at the top of the single-season doubles leaders through the first 40 games of the season. The program record in a single season is 18, set by Lindsey Fleet in 2008.
- The Torero outfield has developed a strong reputation on defense this season, as Jennings, Mikalyn Emanuelli and Carly Ruiz have a combined eight outfield assists after just one combined assist by Torero outfielder's last season.
- Amanda Limon continues to serve as the defensive leader of the team, while climbing the Toreros all-time assists list. Limon stands in seventh all-time (359) and needs 18 to pass Kathleen Bonja (376) for sixth.
- Should Limon play in all remaining games this season, she could become the eighth Torero to ever play 200 games and the fifth to start 200 games.
Â
TORERO TIDBITS
- Rose stands at 319 strikeouts and needs four more to pass Megan Sabbatini (322) for fourth on the Toreros all-time strikeout list.
- Joecellia Roberts (26) needs two more doubles to enter the top-10 all-time at San Diego and match Jade Quentin (28) for tenth.
- Roberts enters the weekend on a nine-game hitting streak, good for the second longest by a Torero this season.
- San Diego leads the WCC in doubles (53) and ranks 66th nationally.
- In addition, Johnson and Jennings rank first and second in the conference and 15th and 38th nationally.
- Arisa Tovar (11) continues to shine on the defensive end, ranking 12th nationally in runners caught stealing.
