PORTLAND — Winners of 10 in a row and 14 of its last 17 games, San Diego baseball (21-10, 7-2 WCC) will look to continue its momentum on the road this weekend, traveling to the Pacific Northwest for a crucial West Coast Conference series against Portland (20-10, 6-0 WCC).

First pitch in the series opener at Joe Etzel Field on Friday night is set for 6:00 p.m., followed by a 3:00 p.m. start in game two on Saturday, and a 1:00 p.m. finale on Sunday afternoon. All three games will be streamed live on ESPN+, with live statistics available on PortlandPilots.com.

LAST TIME OUT - Toreros Take Down Tritons for Tenth Straight Victory
• A strong performance on the mound from starter Ryan Kysar backed by a pair of impressive efforts out of the Torero bullpen pushed San Diego baseball to its tenth straight victory and its longest win streak in nearly 16 years, as it surged past UC San Diego by a 7-1 margin in a midweek non-conference matchup at Triton Ballpark on Tuesday night.

The Toreros struck first in the second inning, but could not claim a lead larger than one until the eighth, when a late-game rally led by RBI singles from Jakob Christian, Will Worthington, and Angelo Peraza gave them a six run advantage, which was enough cushion for Ivran Romero and Tristan LaMaison to finish the job on the mound for USD with a pair of scoreless outings.

USD's current ten game win streak is the Toreros' longest since they recorded a program-record 16 victories in a row from April 4 to April 27, 2008.

Notable:
• After missing the Toreros' first 31 games this season due to injury, right-handed pitcher Tristan LaMaison made his 2024 debut on Tuesday evening. His scoreless ninth-inning outing comes 370 days after he turned in a scoreless inning against UC San Diego at Triton Ballpark last season.

• Jack Gurevitch's 2-for-4 mark on Tuesday evening pushed his batting average to a team-high .404 and extended his hit streak to eleven games.

• Christian's eighth inning single extended his hit streak to ten games.

• Worthington's 2-for-3 performance marked his second multi-hit and multi-RBI performance in a row.

• With Tuesday night's victory, San Diego clinched at least a season series victory with UC San Diego, giving it a 2-0 record with one game remaining (May 7).

ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST PORTLAND
• The Toreros are 64-31 against the Pilots all-time, with the two teams' most recent meeting coming last season on April 16, 2023, when then-freshman Jack Gurevitch delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to push USD to a 7-6 comeback win at Fowler Park.

• San Diego last played at Joe Etzel Field on April 8 and 9, 2022, when it dropped two games out of three to the Pilots in a weekend series that featured a Saturday doubleheader due to inclement weather in Portland. USD lost a 6-2 decision in game one that weekend, won game two by an 8-6 margin, then lost 5-4 in 10 innings in the series finale hours later.

FOR STARTERS (PROBABLE)
FRIDAY: Right-hander Josh Randall (1-2, 3.31 ERA) is set to start game one for the Toreros against the Pilots at Joe Etzel Field.

• He most recently pitched San Diego's series opener against Loyola Marymount last weekend, when he allowed three earned runs on one hit across 5.1 innings while walking four and striking out six.

• Across 32.2 innings and seven starts in 2024 he has struck out a tied-for-team-high 42 batters, walked 14, and held opposing hitters to a .206 average.

• Randall, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound junior from San Juan Capistrano, California, transferred to USD from Arizona, where he spent his freshman and sophomore seasons.

• He made 14 relief appearances during his true freshman campaign in 2022, compiling a 1-0 record and 15 strikeouts while limiting opposing hitters to a .231 batting average.

• As a sophomore in 2023, he was limited to just one pitching appearance due to injury.

• Randall brings postseason experience to the Torero rotation, having thrown three innings for the Wildcats in the 2022 NCAA Coral Gables Regional against Ole Miss.

• On January 26, he was tabbed as the 2024 Perfect Game Preseason WCC Pitcher of the Year.

SATURDAY: Logan Reddemann, who was named the WCC Freshman of The Week on April 1,  will make his seventh start of the season and ninth overall pitching appearance of 2024 when he takes the mound for USD on Saturday afternoon.

• Reddemann (3-2, 4.23 ERA) most recently pitched last Saturday in game two of San Diego's series against LMU when he received his second consecutive win after throwing seven strong innings (tied for USD's longest pitching appearance of 2024) for a second straight week, allowing just one earned run on eight hits while walking none and striking out five.

• So far in 2024 he has struck out 32 and walked 10 across a team-high 38.1 innings pitched.

• A 6-foot-2, 185-pound righty from Palmdale, California, Reddemann attended Quartz Hill High School in Lancaster, California, where he batted .420 across his prep career and compiled a 1.62 ERA.

• He earned First Team All-CIF Southern Selection honors in 2022 and 2023 and threw a perfect game during his senior season that included 11 strikeouts while going 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles.

• Reddemann is a switch-hitting two-way player who could also play middle infield for USD.

SUNDAY: Graduate left-handed pitcher Calvin Schapira will take the mound for San Diego in its series finale at Portland on Sunday in what will mark his sixth start of 2024 and his ninth overall pitching appearance.

• Schapira, who was named the WCC Pitcher of the Week on March 25, most recently appeared in USD's series finale against the Lions last Sunday. He surrendered five runs on four hits that afternoon, striking out four and walking one before departing the game early due to cramps.

• So far in 2024 he has compiled a 3-0 record and a 4.64 ERA across 33 innings pitched, which is the second-highest total on the USD roster. His 42 strikeouts this season are tied with Randall for the team lead.

• Schapira attended USC (2019), Central Arizona College (2020), and Purdue (2021-2023) before transferring to USD as a graduate student this year.

• He has walked only eight this season while holding opposing hitters to a .236 average.

• On March 23 against Saint Mary's he threw seven strong innings that saw him allow just two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out nine. His seven innings pitched that afternoon are now tied for the longest outing by a USD pitcher in 2024, and his nine strikeouts are the second-most by a Torero in a single game this season. Schapira's ensuing WCC Pitcher of the Week selection was the Toreros' first since April of 2022.

JAKOB CHRISTIAN NAMED WCC PLAYER OF THE WEEK

• Christian batted a remarkable .563 (9-for-16) with seven runs scored, a double, four home runs, seven RBI, a walk and a stolen base last week. The Toreros won four times to extend their win streak to nine games.
