SACRAMENTO, CA — San Diego women's rowing traveled to Lake Natoma this past weekend to compete in the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship.
The Toreros kicked off racing on Saturday morning where the 1V8+ placed 2nd, beating out the University of Portland and Seattle University with a time of 6:42.46 and qualifying for the grand finals. Next up was the 2V8+, who beat out UCSD by less than a second with an impressive final push in the final 300m, securing them a spot in the grand finals with a time of 6:44.16. The USD 1V4+ A and 1V4+ B boats raced in the same heat, coming in second and third respectively. The novice 4+ rounded out the day with another win, beating the second place boat by 18 seconds and coming in with a time of 8:37.42. All boats made it to the grand finals on Sunday.
On Sunday, the day was highlighted by the 2V8+. They got out to an early lead and were pushed by UCSD for the entire 2000m, but came through with the win with a time of 6:55.09. The novice 4+ also came out with the win, coming back after being down almost an entire boat length and finishing with a time of 7:57.32. The 1V8+ finished in 4th place, beating out St. Mary's College and University of Portland with a time of 6:54.17. The 1V4+ A and 1V4+ B boats finished in 4th and 5th in their finals, with times of 7:57.51 and 7:57.74 respectively.
"Some exciting wins and okay finishes this weekend," said head coach Dave Cormier after the races. "It was really great to see the 2V8+ push to get to get wins in both their heat and finals. The novice 4 rowed an incredibly gutsy final 500 in the grand final and showed their toughness this weekend. They have a really bright future ahead of them within our program."

The Toreros are back in action on May 18, when they begin competition in the WCC Championships in Gold River, California.
