Men’s Soccer Inks Mateo Zazueta as Graduate Transfer

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego men's soccer program has added another gifted player to fill out their incoming roster for the 2024 season, signing local product Mateo Zazueta as a graduate transfer.

Zazueta joins the Toreros after four years and three seasons at the University of Pennsylvania. The San Diego product will have one season of eligibility left.

Zazueta makes his return to his hometown of San Diego after three successful seasons at Pennsylvania. During his time in Philadelphia, Zazueta and the Quakers won back-to-back Ivy League regular season titles in 2022 and 2023, leading the Quakers to the NCAA Tournament in 2022, where they would advance past Rutgers to the second round of the tournament behind an assist from Zazueta.

Zazueta was particularly impactful in the Quakers' historic 2022 campaign, as he drew a penalty kick that led to the game's opening goal in an Ivy League clinching win at Princeton, to secure the team's first win at Princeton since 1975 and the program's first Ivy League title since 2013.

Over his three seasons, Zazueta tallied four goals and six assists for 14 points over 45 games, where he served as a consistent starter for the last two seasons. This past season, Zazueta scored a career-best three goals and added two assists in his midfield role.

During his high school career, Zazueta played for San Diego Surf's academy, where he was a standout player and helped lead his team as a captain to the USSDA playoffs in 2018 and 2019.

Zazueta joins fellow transfer Inigo Villaldea (Bryant) as newcomers for the 2024 campaign, which is slated to begin this fall.
