San Diego Returns to the JCP for a Two Game Home Stand

USD is set to face the Bearcats and Aggies this week

SAN DIEGO – After a weekend split in Arizona, the San Diego women's basketball team (3-5, 0-0 WCC) is back in the Jenny Craig Pavilion as they're set to play a pair of home games this week.

USD will start their week by hosting Binghamton (3-3, 0-0 Atlantic East) on Wednesday, December 3 at 11:00 a.m. as the program celebrates Future Toreros Day.

The Toreros will then be back in action this Sunday afternoon as they're set to take on Utah State (3-3, 0-0 MWC) at 2:00 p.m. on December 7 as San Diego looks to start the final month of non-conference play on a high note.

USD's looking to replicate their most recent performance as they took down Southeast Missouri State by a 65-55 final score to end the month of November.

THANKSGIVING IN THE DESERT

  • The Toreros are back in action at home after splitting their two games at the ASU Thanksgiving Tournament as USD played in their first back-to-back games of the season.
  • After falling in the opener against Little Rock, San Diego responded in impressive fashion by playing swarming defense against SEMO and making numerous clutch shots in Tempe.
  • USD started a trio of freshmen against the Redhawks as Olivia Owens, Ysabella Von Seipler and Ayla Williams each provided a strong impact in the double digit victory over Southeast Missouri State.
  • Owens had a big weekend playing in her hometown as she averaged 11.5 PPG and five rebounds while facing relentless defensive coverages from the opposition.
  • Making her first career start against SEMO, Eva Ruse provided a huge impact for the Toreros as she scored 21 points and grabbed nine key rebounds to help lead the Toreros to victory.

OWNING THE GLASS

  • San Diego has excelled through the first eight games of the season at controlling the offensive glass and creating extra possessions.
  • USD is currently the West Coast Conference leaders in offensive rebounds per game at 17.4 through the team's first eight games of the season, and currently rank second in the league in rebounding margin at +9.1 boards per contest.

DEFENSIVE INTENSITY

  • A key part of USD's recent run of victories has been a strong commitment on the defensive end of the floor as the Toreros have held opposing teams to just 57.8 PPG this season.
  • USD currently ranks in the top half of the league in both steals (fourth) and blocks (fifth) as they've been able to turn over the opposition and send away their shot attempts.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS BINGHAMTON AND UTAH STATE

  • San Diego will be taking on the Bearcats for the first time in program history as Binghamton will be making the long trip from New York for Wednesday's game.
  • USD will be taking on Utah State for just the fourth time in each program's history as San Diego has won two of the first three meetings including back-to-back victories over the Aggies.

SCOUTING THE BEARCATS

  • Binghamton enters Wednesday morning's match with a 3-3 overall record, as they started their season off with a three game home-slate with blowout victories over both SUNY Geneseo and Bloomsburg before losing to St. Bonaventure. In their first road trip of the season, it began with losing to the powerhouse No. 6 Michigan before regrouping for a gritty 95-94 victory in double overtime over Akron.
  • Leading the Bearcats in scoring so far this season, junior guard Bella Pucci has been posting double figures in scoring every game so far this season shooting 47.1% from the field while also ranking third in rebounding on her squad with 3.5 per game. Notably, she put up 19 points against a tough Michigan team before dropping 29 points against Akron the next game, as she knocked down a quartet of three-point shots.
  • Junior forward Kendall Bennett has been crucial on both ends of the court for Binghamton so far this season, as she is leading the team in rebounds per game with eight. She is also second on the team in scoring averaging 12.8 points per game.

SCOUTING THE AGGIES

  • Utah State enters play this week with a 3-3 overall record as they've earned wins over CSU Bakersfield, Omaha and Stanislaus State to begin the new season. In the Aggies' three losses they've come up short against quality former Pac-12 foes: Utah, Oregon State and Oregon.
  • Pacing the USU offense in the early part of the season has been junior guard Aaliyah Gayles who is averaging 12.8 PPG and has started in five of her team's games this season.  She put together her best showing against the Roadrunners by scoring 17 and connecting on a trio of shots from beyond the arc.
  • As a team, the Aggies have allowed their opponents to shoot 44% from the field and 35% from beyond the arc as San Diego will look to take advantage of USU's defense during Sunday's game at the JCP.
