MAYA KITNA NAMED WCC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
• After setting forth a dominant performance that helped San Diego go undefeated at the Husky Invitational in Seattle, redshirt junior middle blocker Maya Kitna has been named the WCC Defensive Player of the Week for September 15, 2025, the West Coast Conference announced on Monday afternoon.

• Kitna collected 12 blocks (four solo) and 10 digs last weekend, helping the Toreros go undefeated against Arizona and Washington at Alaska Airlines Arena. Kitna registered six blocks (one solo) and five digs on Saturday in a 3-2 win over the Wildcats, then added another six blocks (three solo) and another five digs on Sunday in a five-set win over the tournament host Huskies.

• This is the first conference honor of Kitna's career. She is the fourth Torero to earn a WCC weekly award this season and the second to earn Defensive Player of the Week honors, joining BayLea Sparks (September 1, Defensive Player of the Week), Nemo Beach (September 1, Offensive Player of the Week), and Kylie Munday (September 1, WCC Setter of the Week).

ROAD WARRIORS
• The Toreros began their 2025 season with eight straight away matches, marking the program's longest season-opening road stretch since 2006, when USD started its schedule by playing nine consecutive contests away from home.

• San Diego opened its 2025 campaign with three matches in Honolulu from August 29-31 as part of the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic before traveling north to Los Angeles last weekend for three matches at the Trojan Invitational from September 5-7.

• USD visited Washington for two matches at the Husky Invitational before finally returning home on September 18 to host Yale at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

• While USD's early road swing in 2006 was one game longer, San Diego's 2025 schedule involves far more travel. The Toreros' first three matches in 2006 were technically away from home but took place across town at nearby San Diego State.

ALL-TIME SERIES VS. YALE, SAN DIEGO STATE, AND UC SAN DIEGO

Yale:
• San Diego leads the all-time series, 2-0. Both matchups have ended in 3-0 USD sweeps at the JCP; one in November 2008, and one in September 2012.

San Diego State:
• The Toreros are 33-24 against the Aztecs all-time, and have won each of their last three matchups against SDSU dating back to 2019.

• San Diego is 14-13 all-time at Peterson Gym, and last visited the venue on September 11, 2021, when it won 3-1 over San Diego State.

• USD's last loss to the Aztecs came on October 2, 2018, when it dropped a 3-0 decision at Peterson Gym.

UC San Diego
• USD is 7-5-2 against the Tritons all-time (the two ties, or "1-1 splits" came in 1976 and 1982).

• Saturday will mark UCSD's first trip to the Jenny Craig Pavilion since it opened in 2000.

• San Diego and UC San Diego last met on September 2, 1992, when the Toreros won 3-1 in a neutral-site matchup that was played as part of the SD County Championships.

• The Toreros also won the previous meeting between the two teams, also by a score of 3-1, which was played at UC San Diego in September 1985.

USD last lost to UCSD on October 30, 1984, also a road matchup in La Jolla that was also decided by a score of 3-1.

• UC San Diego last traveled to USD on October 6, 1982, when it beat the Toreros (also) by a score of 3-1 at the USD Sports Center.

• San Diego last defeated the Tritons in a home matchup on October 26, 1977, when it swept UC San Diego at the USD Sports Center.

A BRAND-NEW FLOOR
• Torero volleyball will open its 2025 season with a brand-new Taraflex Court at the Jenny Craig Pavilion, marking the latest in a series of upgrades to the venue that have made it one of the premier arenas of its kind on the West Coast.

• The playing surface, considered the most dynamic in the industry, will provide San Diego athletes and opposing teams with unmatched shock absorption and superior grip.

• San Diego's new court features a striking design that includes USD, WCC, and sponsor logos on a rich light cherry colored playing surface framed by a bold navy blue border.

"The addition of Taraflex to the Jenny Craig Pavilion is representative of our continued investment in women's volleyball here at USD," said USD Associate Vice President/Executive Director of Athletics Kimya Massey. "Our student-athletes work tirelessly to uphold our program's championship standard, and we're proud to now provide them with a best-in-class playing surface that is comparable to what is used by the top programs in the country. This upgrade cements the Jenny Craig Pavilion's status as the top volleyball venue in the West Coast Conference, and as one of the best facilities of its size in the nation. I'm grateful to our USD facilities team and everyone at Gerflor USA for their hard work to get this installed ahead of our first home game of 2025."

• Thursday night's matchup against Yale — the Toreros' 2025 home opener — will mark the first-ever game played on Taraflex in the JCP.

HONORING JACK TALMADGE
• Thursday and Saturday night's games will be played as part of the second annual Jack Talmadge Volleyball Classic in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

• The multi-team event seeks to honor the legacy of longtime San Diego volleyball booster Jack Talmadge, who passed away in 2024 after more than a decade of dedicated support of the Toreros.
