Toreros Fall to Notre Dame in Tournament Opener

San Diego drops 10-2 decision to Fighting Irish as part of USD/SDSU Co-Host Tournament

SAN DIEGO — San Diego softball (10-10, 0-0 WCC) dropped the first game of its weekend in a 10-2 loss to Notre Dame (8-14, 0-3 ACC) on Friday afternoon at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex.

The Fighting Irish struck first after a single, passed ball, and another single got them ahead 1-0 in the first inning.

San Diego responded in the bottom half of the first, as leadoff hitter Kaitlyn Wynia singled off the pitcher's glove for an infield hit. Third baseman Michelle Delgado followed up with a double to right center to put runners in scoring position, before Mallory Axline — batting cleanup — hit a ground ball to the Notre Dame first baseman where Wynia dashed home from third, sliding just under the throw to tie the game at 1-1 for USD. Kaylee Oh continued the rally as she singled through the right side gap, plating Delgado to give the Toreros a 2-1 lead.

Notre Dame tacked on a run in the second inning and four in the third inning backed by a three-run home run to take a 6-2 lead. In the bottom half of the third, the Toreros had a rally brewing early as back to back singles had runners on with no outs. But it was for naught as San Diego couldn't capitalize.

A rally from the visitors in the sixth inning tacked on four more runs, as the Toreros could not recover, ultimately losing 10-2 to a mercy rule.
