Toreros Fall 3-2 in Game Two of Friday Doubleheader Against Idaho State

Two out rally in the seventh pulls San Diego within one, but Bengals hold on

SAN DIEGO — San Diego softball (11-14, 0-0 WCC) fell 3-2 to Idaho State (18-10, 0-0 Big Sky) in game two of Friday's doubleheader at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex, rallying within one in a dramatic seventh inning before falling just short.

Kaitlyn Bartlow started and held the Bengals in check early, striking out three across 4.2 innings before Idaho State scratched across single runs in the second, fourth, and fifth innings — each time on an RBI single — to build a 3-0 advantage. Bartlow gave way to Alex Riggs, who struck out one and tossed 2.1 scoreless innings to keep San Diego within striking distance heading into the seventh.

The Toreros didn't get on the board until two outs in the seventh, but when they did, they made it count. Emily Taylor got it started with a pinch-hit single up the middle, working through a full count with two strikes to stay alive. Kaitlyn Wynia — who finished 2-for-3 with a walk on the afternoon — followed with a single to right that pushed Taylor all the way to third before Michelle Delgado — also fighting off two strikes — singled through the right side to score Taylor and make it 3-1. Mallory Axline then drove in Wynia with a single up the middle on a full count to pull San Diego within one at 3-2, with the tying run standing on third and the Reggie Smith Softball Complex on its feet. Taylor Johnson couldn't get it done, however, as Idaho State escaped the jam to seal the victory.

San Diego will be back in action tomorrow as they close out the series against Idaho State at 12:00 PM at the Reggie Smith Softball Complex.
