Santa Clara Women Win Seventh Straight Over San Diego

San Diego, CA- No. 13 Santa Clara knocked off San Diego 3-0 Sunday afternoon at USD's Torero Stadium in the West Coast Conference opener for both schools. The Broncos and Toreros played a scoreless first half before Santa Clara freshman Tiffany Roberts initiated the scoring, heading in her third goal of the season in the 63rd minute. San Diego goalkeeper Libby Bassett made seven saves but was unable to hold off a Bronco offense that scored a pair of late goals as Santa Clara improved to 7-3-4 on the year. San Diego's overall record fell to 6-4-3.

Both clubs shared chances throughout the first half with the Broncos holding 5- 2 shot advantage at the break. Santa Clara erupted for 12 second half shots and three goals. The freshmen combination of Roberts and Tina Estrada allowed the Broncos a 1-0 lead. Upperclassmen Megan Kakadelas and Kristi Candau netted back-to-back goals in the 86th minute to seal San Diego's fate.

San Diego's loss at Torero Stadium Sunday was just the sixth time in 29 matches that USD has suffered a league loss at home since 1995. 303 fans in San Diego witnessed the Broncos extend its winning streak against USD to seven.

USD will try and rebound when Pepperdine (Fri. 7:30pm) and Loyola Marymount (Sun. 12pm) visit Torero Stadium this weekend.
