San Diego, CA- Fifth-year San Diego Head Coach Jennifer Petrie earned her 100th career coaching victory Halloween night as the host Toreros swept Gonzaga at USD's Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Toreros, ranked 18th nationally in the latest USA Today/AVCA Top-25, breezed to their eighth consecutive home win. San Diego (16-6; 5-3 WCC) hit .351 collectively in game two, breezing past Gonzaga (3-21; 0-8 WCC) by individual game scores of (30-22, 30-16, 30-24).
Torero junior Devon Forster (Boulder, CO) continued her stellar play, turning in a match-best 19 kills during the sweep. Forster also added eight digs. Sophomore setter Lindsey Sherburne (Saratoga, CA) handed out 41 assists. Junior right side hitter Kristen Hurst (Bakersfield, CA) put down the match-clinching point for USD to finish with a total of 12 kills. San Diego freshman standout Ryan Maspero (San Antonio, TX) contributed 10 kills.
The Zags were led by 12 kills from senior Abby Cullen (Chelan, WA). No other Bulldog player reached the double-digit kill mark. The loss to USD marked the 19th consecutive time Gonzaga has been defeated by thee Toreros.
San Diego returns to action Saturday night to host Portland at the JCP. The match is slated to begin at 7:00 PM.
