San Diego (3-2) and Cal State Northridge (1-1) combined for 11 homers and 38 runs Saturday in a game that eventually resulted in a 24-14 Matador victory. USD had led 7-0 in the second inning before 147 at a very windy Matador Field. The game lasted nearly four hours and saw USD use five different pitchers. USD sophomore starter Justin Blaine was tagged with the loss.
San Diego had breezed to three straight wins prior to Saturday's 10-run loss, including having beaten Northridge 6-1 in just 2:16 minutes on Friday. The three-game set concludes 1pm Sunday at Matador Field.
The Toreros led 7-1 after two complete innings before Blaine yielded four third inning runs, making the score 7-5. Blaine was chased an inning later during a seven-run Matador fourth. Newcomer's Josh Butler, Joe Wickman, Justin Holmes and senior Pat Lucy were unable to stop the offensive onslaught by Northridge.
USD senior's Josh Hansen and Joey Prast both hit homeruns. Third baseman Freddy Sandoval was 2-for-5 with four RBI. Hansen would also knock in four runs and Prast scored five times in just two official at-bats.
