SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego Toreros Men's Soccer team upset the second-ranked Santa Clara Broncos Friday night in front of over 1,000 fans at Torero Stadium. It marks the Toreros' biggest home win since 1992 when they beat top-ranked Portland. San Diego improves to 5-4-3 and 2-1-2 in West Coast Conference play with the win. Santa Clara takes their first conference defeat, falling to 11-2-0 overall and 4-1-0 in WCC action.
USD Head Coach Seamus McFadden remarked on the win, "A big game for us. Needed to take some points away from them. We've been struggling, finally able to score. We played well, we battled well.
The match was scoreless at the half, as much of the action was in the middle of the field for the first half. USD held a 6-4 shot advantage at half, with each team putting two shots on net.
In the 66th minute, San Diego's Scott Martin drilled a hard shot from the top of the box that was blocked by a Bronco defender. Michael Caso gathered the rebound on the left side and nailed a shot by diving Santa Clara goalkeeper Kent Harkness to give USD a 1-0 lead. It was Caso's second goal on the season.
Scott Martin added an insurance goal for the Toreros in the 83rd minute as he headed in a corner kick from Eric Pohl for his second goal of the year. USD goalkeeper Lance Friesz continued his strong play, turning away three shots to record his fifth shutout of the year and third in five conference matches.
When asked what made the difference, Coach McFadden stated, "We played for 90 minutes. We wanted to win it more than they did. Played hard for 90 minutes, mistake free for 90 minutes.

San Diego's two goals are the most allowed by Santa Clara this year (they had allowed one goal in four different matches)... USD outshot the Broncos 15-13 in the match... Scott Martin led the Toreros with five shots... Santa Clara's only other loss this year came against #4 California... The upset marks the sixth time the Toreros have defeated a top five team.
