(San Diego, CA) - Randy Curtis hit a grandslam and Joey Prast added a solo shot as host San Diego had their way with Portland Friday afternoon at Cunningham Stadium. Aaron Wilson won for the seventh time this season during the 9-5 Torero victory.
San Diego (23-19, 10-9 WCC) has won eight of its last nine league games after beginning the conference season 1-7. Portland (7-30, 3-13 WCC) totaled 13 hits as a team and Pilot outfielder Justin Pierce homered for the second time this season.
Wilson (7-3) pitched eight complete innings, allowing three earned runs on eleven hits. Freshman reliever Josh Butler gave up a run, two hits and a walk in the ninth.
Prast's fifth homerun of the season initiated the scoring as part of a two-run second inning that saw junior Joe Wickman score Jose Ortega on an RBI single. On the afternoon Prast went 3-for-4 with an RBI and three stolen bases. Wickman was 3-for-3 with two RBI's and a run. Ortega continued his hot hitting with a 2-for-3 effort on Friday.
The Toreros followed up a two-run second inning with a seven-run third- highlighted by the Curtis grandslam, the first of his USD career. Despite entering the game with a team-best 3.48 ERA, the Torero bats cut short the outing of Pilot starter Matthew Peters (2-7) who gave up six earned runs through two and a one third of an inning.
In all, seven of nine Toreros in the lineup registered a hit and USD stole a season-high seven bases. Josh Hansen was 2-for-4 with a stolen base. Keoni Ruth swiped a pair of bags and went 1-for-4.
